Intermountain Opera Bozeman, Montana’s most widely acclaimed and well respected opera company, begins its 2017-2018 40th Season Anniversary with the Americana classic, Aaron Copland’s The Tender Land. Performances are set for Friday, October 13th at 7pm and Sunday, October 15th at 3pm. Both will be held at Willson Auditorium. In a vivid portrait of the rural Midwest, the American dream and youthful spirit come to life in Copland’s only opera. The opera highlights an episode in the lives of Laurie, her family and two migrant workers in a quintessential coming of age story set during the Great Depression. Inspired by Depression-era photographs in James Agee’s book Let Us Now Praise Famous Men, the score is cut from the same cloth as that of “Appalachian Spring” — the melodic, folkish music that defines Aaron Copland. Directed by Steven Daigle, Intermountain’s production of The Tender Land stars Sarah Larsen, Jan Opalach, Lindsay Russell, Joshua Kohl, and Joseph Beutel. Steven Byess takes on the role of conductor.
The mission of the Intermountain Opera Association of Bozeman, established in 1979, is to promote and share the joy of opera in Montana and surrounding areas by providing affordable, high quality opera performances to audience members of all ages and to provide educational outreach to area schools and communities.
