Thursday will be the 11th day of the 11th month, otherwise known as Veterans Day, to honor America’s military veterans.
The date of Veterans Day was chosen to mark the point in time in 1918 when hostilities ceased between Germany and the Allied nations.
In 1919, U.S. President Woodrow Wilson made the annual armistice commemoration official in this country. “To us in America, the reflections of Armistice Day will be filled with solemn pride in the heroism of those who died in the country’s service and with gratitude for the victory,” Wilson said at the time, “both because of the thing from which it has freed us and because of the opportunity it has given America to show her sympathy with peace and justice in the councils of the nations.”
