Local non-profit organization Gallatin Valley Circle of Compassion invites the public to participate in a weekend of special events exploring the topic of death and dying with visiting author Stephen Jenkinson MTS, MSW. On Friday, October 28th from 7–8pm, Jenkinson will present a talk “Should the World Tree Be Withered.” On Saturday, October 29th, from 9:30am–3:30 pm, Jenkinson will offer a workshop entitled “Die Wise – Making Meaning.” Both events will be held at Pilgrim Congregational United Church of Christ at 2118 S. 3rd Avenue in Bozeman.
Stephen Jenkinson, a Harvard educated theologian, is an activist, teacher, author, and farmer. He is the author of Die Wise: A Manifesto for Sanity and Soul, and he is the subject of the National Film Board of Canada documentary, Griefwalker. Jenkinson’s work is hailed as revolutionizing grief and dying in North America as he redefines what it means to live, and die well. Formerly a program director at a major Canadian hospital and medical school assistant professor, Jenkinson now teaches internationally as a workshop leader, speaker, and consultant to palliative care and hospice organizations. He is founder of The Orphan Wisdom School in Canada. He is also a sculptor, traditional canoe builder, and whose house won a Governor General’s Award for architecture.
The weekend events are co-sponsored by Gallatin Valley Circle of Compassion, Health in Motion Physical Therapy, and Spring Integrative Health. The non-profit Gallatin Valley Circle of Compassion is a volunteer group of local community members who are professionally and/or personally touched by the human experience of death and dying. Their mission is “Connecting, educating, and empowering our community in matters related to death and dying”. The organization hosts an annual conference as well as community movie nights and other special events throughout the year.
