As the sunny season inches closer, many of us are dreaming of outdoor events and live music under the Big Sky. Warren Miller Performing Arts Center is meanwhile tiding us over with opportunities to experience the talents of several touring acts this spring.
March 11th sees the tenth annual return of James Sewell Ballet alongside the Ahn Trio. The Saturday evening show begins at 7:30pm with advance tickets available for $20–$55.
Combining their expertise, vision and chutzpah, ballet founders James Sewell and Sally Rousse envisioned a close-knit company of dance artists willing to both challenge their physical limits and expand their notions about ballet. Over three decades later, their critically acclaimed performances move and delight audiences across the country. The embodiment of the original vision is a professional company of dancers performing innovative work that explores the technical boundaries of ballet as they blend the elegance of classical ballet, the freedom of modern dance, and the can-do spirit of vaudeville.
They will pair onstage with the Ahn Trio – composed of sisters Lucia (piano), Maria (cello) and Angella (violin) – who has enthralled audiences with their freewheeling approach to chamber music, their original programming, musical trailblazing and their unabashed zeal in playing works written for them by living composers. All trained at the Juilliard School of music, the Korean-born sisters have been celebrated as consummate musicians, innovative collaborators, classical music ambassadors and teachers.
Following on Thursday, March 16th, the venue welcomes TAIKOPROJECT to its stage. The show begins at 7:30pm. Advanced tickets range $20–$55.
The project was founded in 2000 in Los Angeles by a group of young, emerging taiko drummers led by Bryan Yamami and Masato Baba. They continue to define a modern American style of the traditional Japanese art taiko, blending traditional forms with an innovative and fresh aesthetic for an exhilarating evening of music.
Later this month, Jitro Czech Girls Choir comes to WMPAC. Their performance is set for Saturday, March 25th, beginning at 7:30pm. Advance tickets range $20–$55.
Jitro (pronounced YEE-tro), meaning “Daybreak” in Czech, is more than just a concert choir from Hradec Kralove, a town in the Czech Republic. It is an organization of 400 children in seven preparatory ensembles, of which only the best 25 or 30 qualify to tour. For 45 years they have been admired all over the world for their tonal brilliance, superb intonation, distinctive rich blend of sound and energetic vitality. Today, Jitro is considered as one of the best children’s choirs anywhere in the world.
