The Yellowstone Gateway Museum announces the opening of People of Yellowstone, an exhibit of black and white photographs by Steve Horan, commemorating the museum’s 40th Anniversary. The free event is set for Friday, June 9th, from 5:30–7:30pm at the museum, 118 W. Chinook in Livingston. Horan and writer Ruth W. Crocker will give a short program beginning at 6pm. The photographs will be on display for approximately one year.
The exhibit includes 25 large, black and white portraits of people from the recently published book, People of Yellowstone, by Horan and author Ruth W. Crocker. Subjects in the exhibit and the book include those who maintain its wildness, capture it in photographs, lead expeditions, collect scientific data, wrangle horses for trail rides, document seismic activity, study wildlife, rescue stranded hikers and much more throughout the Yellowstone National Park’s 3,468 square miles.
The book includes 87 portraits and real-life stories, was recognized by the Turner Foundation as a project supporting preservation of the environment, and approved by Yellowstone Forever. See details about the book at www.peopleofyellowstone.com.
Steve Horan studied photography in Toronto and the U.S., and has worked in many aspects of the art. The People of Yellowstone project unites his passion for community and its connection to the natural world. He spent five years crisscrossing three states to find collaborative subjects for the book. Steve has had many gallery exhibitions of his work in U.S.and Canada.
Ruth W. Crocker is the author of the award-winning memoir, Those Who Remain: Remembrance and Reunion After War. Her work has appeared in The Gettysburg Review, O-Dark-Thirty, The Saturday Evening Post, and T.A.P.S. Magazine, in addition to anthologies of creative nonfiction and many trade magazines. Her essays have been nominated for a Pushcart Prize and listed in Best American Essays. She was introduced to Yellowstone by her brother, Ranger Bob Whipple.
The event and program will take place on the second floor of the museum, necessitating the climbing of stairs. Attendees may purchase a book to be signed by Horan and Crocker after the program. Refreshments are available.
