MORe Hops & History, Childbirth lecture series
There’s a lot happening at the Museum of the Rockies in July! Here’s a look at what’s coming up. “Childbirth at the Turn of the Century” will be held Thursday, July 21st at 6pm. Join speakers Dr. Jennifer Hill and Stacey Haugland, CPM to learn what it was like to be pregnant and give birth in Montana at the turn of the century. The lecture will focus on the Tinsley family’s living and working spaces as you explore the reproductive experiences of women in the late 1800s and early 1900s.
This event is FREE and open to the public. Hops & History: The Heat Is On will take place Tuesday, July 26th from 5:30-7:30pm. The Heat is ON: Malting in Montana will feature Dr. Tom Blake and Bridger Brewing Company. Celebrate wheat beers, their origins, and their future. From delicate pilsners to hefty stouts, beer and ale drinkers can all appreciate a well malted grain bill in their glasses. This month, the series will look at the history and process of malting grains and how today’s craft (and industrial) brewers use this ancient method of bringing out the best in barleys and other grains. Dr. Tom Blake, Professor Emeritus, Plant Breeding and Genetics, and former Director of the MSU Barley Breeding Project for more than 30 years, will share how Western Feedstock Technologies Inc. makes malt as Big Sky Malts and builds the Montana Malters line of small malting systems. Now in its third year, MOR’s Hops & History program supports the Museum’s Living History Farm.
Every month during the summer season, Hops & History brings a lively audience of adults to the Farm by pairing the Gallatin Valley’s brewing past–presented by MOR Curator of History, Michael Fox–with beer tastings from local breweries. New for 2016, MOR will welcome co-speakers for each presentation, exploring unique historical topics to complement equally unique local brews. This is a 21+ event. Admission is $10, which includes a $3 mug. Returning participants pay only $7 when they bring back their mug. Roman Fridays for Families will be held weekly through July 29th. Explore Ancient Rome through hands-on activities covering art history, archaeology, architecture, and geology. Make volcanoes, create elaborate frescos, build columns, and more in this exciting drop-in program. Content will vary weekly. This event is included with Museum Membership or Admission. Using the past and present Museum of the Rockies inspires life-long learning in science, history, culture, and art; advances knowledge through collections, research and discovery; and presents engaging, vibrant exhibits and programming. MOR brings the world to Montana and Montana to the world.
