September 9 – December 4, 2016
This fall, our Schools in the Gallery featured exhibit will be Stephen Glueckert’s The Blind Men and the Elephant. This series features 20 black and white drawings in oil pastel, Keno crayon and cattle marker. They take inspiration from an ancient Chinese parable originating during the Han dynasty between 202 BC – 220 AD. They tell the story of six blind men’s attempt to understand their contrasting ideas of what an elephant actually is. Glueckert researched several versions of this tale that had been re-written by several cultures throughout history. Glueckert states ‘The story contrasts the ideas of what we can actually grasp as real through evidence, with what we might perceive in our mind’s eye as truth, and in the end how utterly wrong everyone can be.’
Stephen Glueckert has a Bachelors of Fine Art and M.Ed. in Art Education. He has worked as a children’s counselor, international professor and recently retired as the Curator Emeritus for the Missoula Art Museum. He has spent his life sharing his passion for art through teaching, writing, fellowship and his own continuous practice.
This show was acquired through the Montana Art Gallery Director’s Association of traveling exhibits and made possible through funding via the Montana Arts Council.

The Emerson has partnered with the International Trout Congress to jury two group shows titled Intersections of Trout and Art. 35 works featuring 25 local, national and international artists will be on display in the Emerson’s Lobby and Weaver Room Galleries from September 9 – November 27, 2016. These exhibits were curated to compliment the first annual meeting of the International Trout Congress and their World of Trout events as well as Trout Unlimited’s annual meeting.
The aim is to assemble an international body of trout conservationists and enthusiasts for a series of structured lectures and discussions on the relationship between trout and humans. The World of Trout will focus its discussions on themes that include the diversity and role of trout worldwide, conservation issues, and trout in literature, the arts, and the classroom.
The Emerson is excited to work with the Trout Congress on this event and to curate a show that combines their mission as well as our own. We are pleased to be the venue for both the International Congress meeting in October as well as the Trout Unlimited annual meeting in September.
