The Rialto is home to plenty of live entertainment to help the antsy folks of Southwest Montana make it to spring unscathed! The historic theater brings an exciting lineup of top-tier talent from around the country to its event space in Downtown Bozeman. Here’s a look at just a few of the upcoming happenings.
An Evening of Blues with “Ambassador of” Guy Davis comes to the Rialto with back-to-back performances on Saturday, March 16th at 6pm and 9pm. Tickets to these 18+ shows are $18. Doors at 5:30pm and 8:30pm, respectively.
Davis once said, “I like antiques and old things, old places, that still have the dust of those who’ve gone before us lying upon them.” Blowing that dust off just enough to see its beauty is something he’s excelled at for over twenty years of songwriting and performing. It’s no wonder his reverence for the music of the Blues Masters who’ve gone before him has been evident in every album he’s ever recorded or concert he’s given.
Davis has had his musical storytelling influenced by artists like Blind Willie McTell and Big Bill Broonzy, and his musicality from artists as diverse as Lightnin’ Hopkins and Babatunde Olatunji. However, there’s one man Davis most credits for his harmonica techniques, by stealing and crediting from him everything that he could, and that man is the legendary Sonny Terry. Davis’ latest album, Sonny & Brownie’s Last Train – A Look Back at Brownie McGhee and Sonny Terry, is an homage to these two hugely influential artists, not only on Davis’ career, but to thousands of musicians around the world.
Philly outfit G. Love & Special Sauce take the stage Tuesday, March 19th with Ben Sparaco and The New Effect getting things started at 8pm. Tickets to this 18+ show are $35. VIP Pre-Show Pop-Off passes are also available for $99 (includes general admission ticket). Doors at 7pm for main show.
Garrett “G.Love” Dutton, Jeffrey “The Houseman” Clemens and Jimmy “Jazz” Prescott are celebrating their 25th year as touring and recording artists. With over 15 records released, this pioneering band has been an influence to artists such as Jack White, Jack Johnson, The Avett Brothers, Slightly Stoopid and many more. With their signature blend of Delta blues, hip-hop, funk, rock n’ roll and jazz, Special Sauce has created its own funky stew of American music. Expect a high energy mashup of funky beats and songs written from the front porch to get the world smiling and dancing to the positive message of Love and the Blues. The group’s latest album, Love Saves the Day, is available now.
Vermont-based rock band Twiddle performs on Thursday, March 21st with help from Iya Terra at 8:30pm. Tickets to this 18+ show are $20 with VIP packages also available. Doors at 7:30pm.
Twiddle is touring in continued support of its recent release, PLUMP Chapters 1 & 2. Recorded with legendary producer Ron St. Germain, the double album serves as a reflection of four brothers’ triumphs and struggles, both individual and as a whole. On Chapter 1, songs like “Lost in the Cold” and “Every Soul” detail what it’s like to hit rock bottom and how to rise back up. Comparatively, Chapter 2 contains genre-bending instrumentals, as well as mystifying epics like “Nicodemus Portulay” and “Orlando’s.” In the live setting, people are invigorated by Twiddle’s community, promoting positivity and the band’s skillful improvisational music. So many like-minded people believe in the greater good, and they find that good in Twiddle.
Enjoy A Night of Comedy with Steve Byrne on Saturday, March 23rd. Also featuring the talents of Thomas Blake, Jennifer Jane, Sarah Aswell and Will Thomas, the evening of laughs will begin at 8:30pm. Tickets to this 18+ show are $20. Doors at 8pm.
Steve Byrne has risen through the ranks of the comedy world to become one of the industry’s most innovative and sought-after performers. Star and creator of Sullivan & Son, he’s also lent his talents to Vince Vaughn’s Wild West Productions for several seasons. Byrne’s acting resume includes feature films like The Dilemma, Couples Retreat, Four Christmases and The Goods: The Don Ready Story. His television resume also includes ABC’s The Middle, Chappelle’s Show, The Howard Stern Show, NBC’s The Real Wedding Crashers and stand-up appearances on Conan, Jimmy Kimmel Live!, The Late Late Show, Comic View and The Tonight Show with Jay Leno. A true international comedian, Byrne has performed to sold-out crowds around the world.
Indie rock acts mewithoutYou and Tigers Jaw bring a joint performance with openers Teddy Roberts and The Mouths on Monday, March 25th at 8:30pm. Tickets to this 18+ show are $16. Doors at 7:30pm.
Across six full-lengths and a handful of EPs, Philadelphia’s mewithoutYou – alternately labeled experimental punk, post-hardcore, indie rock, etc. – have long put a premium on progression, never anchoring themselves to a single sound and instead gracefully wandering across stylistic lines. It’s that same spirit that informed the band’s latest album, [Untitled]. The lyrics are deeply poetic, and the themes are familiar – e.g., mysticism, metamorphosis, mental illness – but, more so than recent mewithoutYou albums, are built on frontman Aaron Weiss’ lived experiences. The collection adds to a body of work that is heartbreaking, surreal, and downright revelatory, but still mighty fun.
Hailing from Scranton, Pennsylvania, Tigers Jaw will perform cuts from their fifth full-length, spin. The album sounds more fully formed than anything they’ve done in the past and simultaneously establishes them as a band whose appeal truly transcends genres. From the sweetly syncopated, fuzzed-out bliss of the opener “Follows” to the midtempo melodicism of “June” and liltingly lovely ballad “Bullet,” the collection features their usual relatable lyrics and sees the band stretching out sonically.
Looking to next month, The Last Revel sets up with help from Ian Thomas & Band of Drifters on Friday, April 5th at 8:30pm. Tickets to this 18+ show are $15. Doors at 7:30pm.
The Last Revel are a Minneapolis-based trio of powerfully talented multi-instrumentalists who naturally blend the genres of folk, rockabilly, old time string-band and rock to create a sound equally original and timeless. They’re known to consistently deliver “bombastic live performances,” as well as delicate and haunting folk ballads. Their latest album, Hazard & Fate, showcases the band’s ability to create rich and delicately textured recorded material with a modern “tip of the hat” to the storied history of American folk music. New singles “Rust” and “Roses” are available now.
