Fans of classic country, folk, and bluegrass music should enjoy the evening that is planned in the historic Ellen Theatre on Friday, October 9, at 8:00 p.m. A special presentation by Nell Robinson, Jim Nunally and their group will perform music from the critically acclaimed Nell Robinson CD, “Rose of No Man’s Land.” The concert is another co-sponsored event by The Bozeman Folklore Society and The Ellen Theatre. Reserved seating tickets are on sale now for $17.00 at the box office, (406) 585-5885, or online at www.theellentheatre.com. BFS members may purchase through the box office for a discounted price of $15.00.
Nell Robinson has been described as a “modern day Patsy Cline” and “one of the freshest voices in roots music.” Her 2014 CD, produced by Joe Henry, features Kris Kristofferson, John Doe, Elliott, Nunally, Poet Laureate Maxine Hong Kingston and more and is now a PBS Special, “Music Gone Public” airing throughout the country.
Like the album, Nell Robinson’s concert takes you on a journey through 250 years of war and service and family, including music from the Revolutionary War to the present, interwoven with letters, stories and poetry from generations of her rural Alabama family. Robinson’s own original music is featured, as well as songs from legendary songwriters such as Guy Clark, Rodney Crowell, Johnny Cash.
Nell Robinson is joined by musical partner, Jim Nunally, a Grammy and Flatpick Guitar award winner. Jim currently tours with both the David Grisman Bluegrass Experience and John Reischman and the Jaybirds. Rounding out the band are such musical superstars as Pete Grant (pedal steel), Jon Arkin (percussion) and the legendary Jim Kerwin (bass).
National Medal of Arts winner and folk icon Ramblin’ Jack Elliott is prominently featured on the “The Rose of No Man’s Land” album so we are in for a real treat as the band joins Jack to perform a few songs and stories from the project – which Nell Robinson created using actual letters from her Alabama family with stories deeply intertwined with events in American history. The outcome is poignant, funny and connective. The show is fun, very lively and features great music both familiar and new.
The legendary Elliott is one of the remaining folk troubadours and was dubbed, “King of the Folksingers” by Bob Dylan. After 60 plus years of touring, to say he’s mastered his craft would be an understatement. Any chance to spend time with this national treasure should not be missed.
“Ramblin’ Jack knocks Johnny Cash’s song Drive On out of the park – best version I’ve ever heard, “ said Nell Robinson. “Jack is one of the most present beings I’ve ever met and we are all honored and tickled to be onstage with this folk legend.”
The band will warm the crowd up with a short set of classic country music to “let the band let loose a little,” according to Nell. Pete Grant’s resume looks like a who’s who of music and includes the Grateful Dead, Guy Clark, Tim Hardin, Rodney Crowell, Hoyt Axton, the Dillards and many more. Jon Arkin is a go to percussionist and Jazz instructor, with decades of experience on recordings and performances from Madison Square Garden and the Montreal Jazz Festival to every major Bay Area venue. Jim Kerwin has the distinction of being the longest member of the David Grisman Quintet, as well as stints with Jerry Garcia, Yo Yo Ma and Stephanne Grapelli, and Del McCoury.
The Bozeman Folklore Society (BFS) is an all volunteer, non-profit organization dedicated to promoting, preserving, enjoying and sharing the music, dance, arts, crafts, and skills of traditional cultures.
