Celebrate Mom with afternoon of arts, culture & live music

Though you never really know here in Montana, the fifth month of the calendar year is marked by a growing anticipation of summer’s arrival. But before we can swap long sleeves for tees and really segue into the sunniest days, the second Sunday is the time to appreciate the ladies who make our enjoyment possible – Mother’s Day! Following a casual brunch or familial gathering, there are plenty of opportunities to entertain Mom and the rest of the family on May 12th.
The Arts
The second day of the annual Gem & Mineral Show will run from 10am–6pm at the Gallatin County Fairgrounds. Numerous vendors will be selling gems, minerals, fossils, beads, jewelry and more. Stock up on unique gifts for graduation, holidays, and all other occasions. Admission is $3 for adults, $2 for mothers, and free for those 12 and under.

A screening of Shrek 2 heads to The Ellen at 2pm. Newlyweds Shrek and Fiona join a cast of zany characters from Fiona’s Fairy Godmother to the swashbuckling cat Puss in Boots. The movie stars Mike Myers, Eddie Murphy, Cameron Diaz, Antonio Banderas, Julie Andrews, and John Cleese. Admission is only $3 at the door!
Bozeman Symphony presents the second performance of Fauré Requiem at Holy Rosary downtown at 3pm. Jon Harney will conduct Gabriel Fauré’s sublime and timeless composition alongside additional works by Mendelssohn, Homilius, Brahms, Elgar and more. Those featured will represent some of the most lively, sublime and relevant pieces by old and new masters. Adult admission is $25 with discounted student tickets available for $15.
Livingston’s Blue Slipper Theatre stages its final rendition of Annie Baker’s Circle Mirror Transformation at 3pm. The story follows a small town Vermont drama group whose in-class exercises pour into their personal lives. Tickets are $16 for adults, $13 for students and those over 60, and $10 for youth under 18.
Also at 3pm, Park High students take the stage for a public performance of Disney’s Beauty and the Beast at Livingston’s Shane Center. The classic tale of Belle, the Beast, Cogsworth, Chip Potts & Co. is perfect for the whole family to enjoy! Tickets are $18 for adults, $14 for seniors and college students, and $10 for youth 17 and under.
Live Music
And if you’re hoping to take Mom for a few spins around the dance floor, several area venues will play host to Sunday sets by talented local musicians. Pine Creek Lodge will feature live entertainment by Kris Zigich during brunch from 11am–1pm. Later in the evening, one-woman-band Foxy Blues brings a show to Outlaw Brewing with a blend of blues, country, folk, reggae, and jazz at 6pm. Lazy Owl String Band will strum a few tunes at Red Tractor Pizza, also at 6pm. Steeped in an old-timey traditional style, the band’s influences range from jazz and blues to punk rock. At Bozeman Hot Springs, PermaFunk is set for a night full of funky, soulful, psychedelic, Latin-infused grooves beginning at 7pm. The duo of Wind and the Willows heads to Norris Hot Springs at 7pm. Their distinct sound combines brass, strings, and triple harmonies for a great show. And at Chico Hot Springs, Portland act Rockin’ Jake delivers an electric performance of of second line, swamp funk, blues and zydeco at 8pm.
