Bozeman Symphony announces Requiem, Shane Center performances
The Bozeman Symphony Orchestra and Symphonic Choir returns to the gorgeous setting of Holy Rosary Church for another compelling program of choral masterpieces. Two performances of Fauré Requiem are set for Friday, May 10th at 7pm and Sunday, May 12th at 3pm. Adult admission is $25 with discounted student tickets available for $15. Holy Rosary is located at 220 W Main in Downtown Bozeman.
Joined by orchestra, Jon Harney will conduct Gabriel Fauré’s sublime and timeless composition alongside additional works by Mendelssohn, Homilius, Brahms, Elgar and more. Those featured will represent some of the most lively, sublime and relevant pieces by old and new masters.
Fauré’s Requiem has become one of the most widely performed scores for choir and orchestra in the world. It is highly accessible for singers of all backgrounds and brings us, in the end, a comforting affirmation that we need not fear. Though Fauré worked in service to the Catholic Church his entire life, he was not particularly religious; his thoughts on faith and religion were unconventional at best, and sometimes cynical or agnostic. In spite of this, his musical language stirs us to listen and be assured.
In Fauré’s words, “everything I managed to entertain in the way of religious illusion I put into my Requiem, which moreover is dominated from beginning to end by a very human feeling of faith in eternal rest.”
The Requiem will feature bass-baritone Daren Small and sopranos Erin Henke (May 10th) and Kody Van Dyke (May 12th). Small is a distinguished soloist in the American Northwest. He enjoys sharing his passion for singing both on stage and in the classroom and voice studio. He is currently pursuing his Doctor of Musical Arts degree at the University of Cincinnati College-Conservatory of Music (CCM) in Cincinnati, Ohio.
Additionally, the Requiem features a small chamber orchestra with Concertmaster Carrie Krause as a featured soloist. A master violinist, Krause specializes in early music, performing with baroque ensembles as soloist and concertmaster across the country and on numerous international series. She is concertmaster of the Bozeman Symphony, teaches students ages four to infinity, and is founder of the numerous regional concert series.
Jon Harney is an associate professor of music at Montana State University where he teaches voice and choir. As a tenor soloist, he has sung more than twenty-five principal and supporting roles in opera, operetta, and major works with orchestra and chorus. While active with the University of Minnesota opera theater, he appeared as The Sailor in Dido and Aeneas, Fenton in Falstaff, Nemorino in The Elixir of Love, Don José in Carmen, Ferrando in Cosi fan tutte and Junki in Rautavaara’s Aleksis Kivi. Harney was chorus master for the Intermountain Opera from 2001-2015 and prepared the choruses for productions of L’elisir d’amore, Aida and The Pirates of Penzance, among others.
Following on Thursday, May 16th, Symphony at the Shane, a concert series presented by the Bozeman Symphony, returns to Livingston’s Shane Lalani Center for the Arts beginning at 7:30pm. Adult admission is $15 with discounted student tickets available for $10. The Shane Center is located at 415 East Lewis in Livingston.
The popular performances feature the very best of the Bozeman Symphony Orchestra and Symphonic Choir. Each performance showcases two diverse soloists and ensembles. You’ll be wowed by these fantastic musicians and proud to know they are your neighbors!
Violinist Carrie Krause, along with Julie Gosswiller on piano, will perform a selection of romantic musings featuring the music of Sergei Prokofiev, Cesar Franck, and Fritz Kreisler. Clarinetist Wendy Bickford along with Laurel Yost on piano will perform Solo de concours by Andre Messager, Sonata No. 2 in E-flat by Johannes Brahms, and Three Pieces for Clarinet and Piano by Paquito D’Rivera.
