BFS partners w/ Rialto for indie Sundays, announces Ellen return of ‘Science on Screen’
Bozeman Film Society (BFS) is sure to pack the Rialto and Ellen Theatre the second half of the month with a full slate of award-winning new releases and cult classics! First up on March 18th, experience a maritime England-centric Sunday at the Rialto with back-to-back showings of Film Stars Don’t Die in Liverpool and the new hi-def world release of Concert for George.
In Film Stars, actress Annette Bening portrays Gloria Grahame, the 1950s Academy Award-winning actress who was ostracized from Hollywood after refusing to bow to sexism. In Peter Turner’s memoir, what starts as a vibrant May–December affair between a legendary femme fatale and her young lover quickly grows into a deeper relationship. Showing at 1pm, the film is rated R with a runtime of 104 minutes.
Then, at 3:30pm, celebrate the 75th birthday of George Harrison with a special theatrical screening of the tribute concert filmed at Royal Albert Hall in 2002, one year to the day after his death. Remastered in hi-def and 5.1 surround sound, Concert for George captures stunning renditions of some the most significant music of the 20th century, including “While My Guitar Gently Weeps” (featuring Eric Clapton on guitar, Paul McCartney on piano, and Ringo Starr on drums), “Taxman” (performed by Tom Petty and the Heartbreakers), and “The Inner Light” (covered by Jeff Lynne and Anoushka Shankar.) Not rated, the film runs 101 minutes.
BFS screens All the Money in the World on Sunday, March 25th at the Rialto beginning at 3pm, followed at 6:30pm with an encore screening of Concert for George. The true story of the kidnapping of John Paul Getty III, World is director Ridley Scott’s tense crime drama that follows the desperate attempts of his devoted mother, Gail (Michelle Williams), to convince her father, billionaire J. Paul Getty (the Oscar-nominated Christopher Plummer), to pay the ransom. Rated R, the film runs 132 minutes.
Following on Tuesday, March 27th at the Ellen Theatre, join audiences across the country for an all-ages national evening of Science on Screen, an initiative designed to bring the exciting world of science alive on the big screen by pairing films with insightful discussions by local experts. BFS welcomes acclaimed science writer David Quammen and his nieces, Lily and Mae Madison, for the wonderfully original 1982 sci-fi cult classic, The Adventures of Buckaroo Banzai Across the 8th Dimension.
Showing at 7pm, the film will be introduced by Banzai devotee, David Quammen, and is followed by a presentation titled “Seriosity and Beyond: A Conversation with Quammen & Co.” Guaranteed to be a lively inter-generational discussion on Planet Ten, the 8th Dimension, Buckaroo Banzai, and the Electrode Watermelon, Quammen and his Gen Z nieces ask the question: is silly science fiction any sillier or less wonderful than serious science fiction? Rated PG, the film runs 103 minutes. Special pricing for Science on Screen is only $5 for all seats (plus fees).
Bozeman Film Society recently announced its partnership with the Rialto for screenings at the newly renovated venue. Located in the heart of Downtown Bozeman, the Rialto was host to BFS films from 1983–2006, and will now feature films on Sundays. This is in addition to bi-weekly BFS screenings at the Ellen Theatre – effectively expanding the eclectic menu of award-winning indie, art house, and foreign films. Experience movies with the Rialto’s hi-res digital projector and state of the art sound system in a cabaret-style setting.
