July Jams feature Yak Attack, Charlie Parr & more
ChickenJam West presents Yak Attack at the Filling Station on Wednesday, July 24th at 9pm. Tickets to this 21+ show are $7 in advance and $10 at the door. Doors at 8pm.
The live electronica power trio visits from Portland. The group’s music is best described as “organic electronica,” using skillful playing, live loops, and tightly constructed songs combined with raw improvisation to build high-energy and uplifting dance music from scratch, with every note played and recorded live. Yak Attack draws influence from a wide spectrum of electronica, including house, drum and bass, and breakbeat, along with elements of jam, funk, and jazz. Their live shows are musically sophisticated and widely accessible. Safety Third, Yak’s latest release, is available now.
A returning favorite! Minnesota-based folk blues artist Charlie Parr is back in Bozeman as part of the ‘Grizzly Pine Cannery District Patio Series’ on Tuesday, July 30th. Bluegrass State Americana trio Lost Dog Street Band will get the music started at 7pm. Held outside Wildrye Distilling, Dean’s Zesty Booch and 406 Brewing, tickets to this all ages event are $20 in advance and $25 at the door. Doors at 6pm.
Following last summer’s unfortunate cancelation, Parr returns with an incredible outdoor performance ahead of his album release this fall. The eponymous collection will feature new songs and new studio versions of classics/audience favorites from throughout his career. The album is an honest and raw recording of Charlie reflecting on himself and his career up to this point. It’s a musical reckoning that came after a freak accident less than a year ago that forced him to relearn how to play guitar, causing him to take stock of the songs he’s written over his lifetime. Charlie Parr is a stunning folk record that will surely stand the test of time, just like the man himself.
Looking to a new month, a trio show featuring the talents of Lost Ox, Letter B and Mandy Rowden is set for Friday, August 2nd at the Filling Station. The music begins at 8:30pm. Admission to this 21+ show is FREE with a Sweet Pea wristband and $5 for those without. Doors at 7:30pm.
Portland-based Lost Ox is part rapid-fire rambling lyrics, part whiskey blues soul grass, two parts neo-funk groove – all with an extra helping of electro-psychedelic heat. The prog-blues-folk quartet bring their own brand of inventive playfulness to performances; weaving dark, murderous yarns in the same stride as delightfully groovy jive numbers, saturated richly with improvisation and interplay. Their debut album, Wildheart, is available now.
Missoula’s own Letter B was born from a thought and a beat, a cadence and a rhyme, a bouncing ball bellowing under the Big Sky. The folk/rock, indie/hip-pop group draws inspiration from the likes of the Dave Matthews Band, Atmosphere and Ray Lamontagne to blend its down-home roots with a global perspective. Their latest EP Catch Me When I Fall and new collaborative release A Letter from Bliss are available now.
Mandy Rowden is an Austin-based singer/songwriter and multi-instrumentalist who’s been compared to Lucinda Williams, Kim Richey, and Stevie Nicks, to name a few. Her latest album, When That Day Comes, is a collection of warm, engaging songs about life and loss. Its easy pace and vulnerable lyrics roll out a welcome mat of raw, emotional accessibility revealing a world textured by hurt and hope alike.
Also this summer, ChickenJam presents FREE live music at the Bozeman Taproom immediately following Music on Main. Upcoming acts include indie folk-rockers Canyon Kids on July 25th and harmonizing multi-instrumental act Wind and the Willows on August 1st. Enjoy these and other regional bands one block north after the downtown festivities this summer!
