The Bozeman Film Society has a packed line-up of films this March, beginning Wednesday, March 2nd with the romantic British/American spellbinder, Carol, screening at 7:30 pm in the Ellen Theatre. Set in 1950s New York, two women from very different backgrounds find themselves in the throes of love. Under director Todd Haynes’ sure hand, 2016 Academy Award nominees Cate Blanchett and Rooney Mara deliver a tale of intimacy and repression that dares to imagine a happy ending. Total Film critic Kevin Harly states, “Every glance means something, no strain shows: it’s filmmaking as natural as breathing.” Based on the Patricia Highgate novel The Price of Salt, Carol was nominated for six Academy Awards. Rated R (with a 93% Rotten Tomatoes score), the film runs 118 minutes.
Thursday, March 10th at 7:30 pm in the Ellen Theatre, BFS features The Lady in the Van, based on Alan Bennett’s true story of Miss Shepherd (played magnificently by Maggie Smith), a woman of uncertain origins who “temporarily” parked her van in Bennett’s London driveway and proceeded to live there for 15 years. What begins as a begrudged favor becomes a relationship that will change both their lives. Filmed on the street and in the house where Bennett and Miss Shepherd lived all those years, acclaimed director Nicholas Hytner reunites with Bennett (The Madness of King George) to bring this rare and touching portrait to the screen. The Wall Street Journal’s Joe Morgenstern calls it, “wonderfully funny, terribly touching and a vehicle-with comically-dilapidated-vehicles for the boundless gifts of Maggie Smith.” Rated PG-13 (with a 94% Rotten Tomatoes score), the film runs 105 minutes.
Wednesday, March 23rd TBA.
Finally, Wednesday, March 30th, at 7 pm (please note earlier start time) Bozeman Film Society is proud to present Druid Peak, the first in our inaugural three-part Science on Screen (SoS) film series, a national program sponsored by the Coolidge Corner Theater and the Alfred P. Sloan Foundation. Set against the backdrop of the wolf reintroduction program in Yellowstone National Park, Druid Peak is a redemptive coming of age story about a troubled teenaged boy (Spencer Treat Clark) whose mom, unable to control him, ships him off to the wilds of Wyoming, where his estranged father (Andrew Wilson) works as a Yellowstone biologist. Shot on location in Wyoming, Montana, Utah and West Virginia, we see that the role of wilderness in the human experience is as necessary as food, shelter, or love. If your children are teens, or about to be teens, bring them along! The LA Times calls the film, “Enlightening… undeniably gorgeous.” Rated PG-13 (for brief language), the film runs 115 minutes.
Now in its 9th year, Science on Screen provides national funding to expand film and scientific literacy by creatively pairing screenings of popular culture and documentary films with lively expert presentations. Each film offers a jumping-off point for a speaker to introduce current research or technological advances that engage audiences. Druid Peak will be introduced by Doug Smith, lead biologist on the Yellowstone Wolf Project, with a special appearance by the film’s Director, Marni Zelnick, and Executive Producer, Maureen Mayer. The screening is a collaboration with the Montana Outdoor Science School and the Montana Environmental Educators. Other SoS films include Jurassic World, screening Saturday, April 30th at 3 pm & 7 pm with renowned Paleontologist Jack Horner, and The Martian on Wednesday, May 25th. at 7 pm, opened by Dr. Mac Burgess, MSU Ph.D. Plant Science and Plant Pathology.
