The Bozeman Public Library offers more than just a vast selection of books, periodicals, and movies to its many pass-holders—it also hosts a number of fun and informative events open to the public. Here’s a look at what’s coming up in October.
The Bozeman Public Library will present another edition of Noon Notes @ the Library on Monday, October 3rd beginning at 12pm. This event will feature the Aoide Consort: Erin Equall – Soprano, Alethia Heide – Soprano, Cara Robertus – Alto, Scott Whitaker – Tenor, Andrew Major – Baritone, and John Zirkle – Bass.
With performances described as “the best choral singing we’ve ever heard in Bozeman (or almost anywhere),” the Aoide Chamber Singers have established themselves as one of Montana’s leading vocal ensembles. Founded in fall 2012 at Montana State University by then freshman Andrew Major, Aoide humbly began with seven singers. Their high level of artistry and commitment to modern music drew attention from others and membership now exceeds 20. Early this fall, Aoide will be recording an album with Jereco Studios in Bozeman for release in the spring. It will feature a three works of composer Colin Britt commissioned by the choir which will be given its world premiere at their Candlelight Christmas performances.
This popular chamber music series is at the Library, the first Monday of every month, from noon to 1pm, and is always free and open to the public. It is sponsored by the Montana Chamber Music Society, the Montana Arts Council, and hosted by the Bozeman Public Library Foundation. Please visit www.montanachambermusicsociety.org/concerts-noonnotes.htm for more information.
Wonderlust’s next Friday Forum concerning the proposed Law and Justice Center will be held Friday, October 14th from 12–1:30pm in the Library’s Large Community Room. The Forum will feature staff and elected officials from both the City and County, starting with a short presentation on the proposed project. Participants will learn about the purported need and scope of the new Center, followed by an active Q&A session. Please come prepared with your questions and concerns for the discussion, which will be moderated by Bob Hawks, former city commissioner, mayor, and state senator.
Friday Forum is a monthly speaker series sponsored by Wonderlust, a non-profit organization dedicated to life-long learning, and hosted by the Bozeman Library Foundation. For more information, please call (406) 582-2426.
Yoga for All abilities continues to be held every Tuesday in October from 11–11:45am and 12–12:45pm in the Large Community Room. The morning class is taught by accomplished yoga instructor Turi Hetherington, and the noon class by local mom and yoga instructor Jen DuCharme. The morning class tends to have more kids, following Books & Babies, but all are welcome to either class. Please bring your own mat. Call (406) 582-2426 for more information.
Come join an all ages, all abilities, all genre writing group focused on honest and constructive critique. The Bozeman Writers Group meets every Monday in the Library Boardroom at 6pm. The weekly meetings involve writing prompts, craft discussion, feedback, constructive criticism, and more. Come practice and improve your writing, provide support, and have fun in the process! Writers: Please bring ten copies of your piece (up to ten pages double-spaced, twelve point font). All are welcome!
Mark your calendars! The 9th annual Children’s Festival of the Book is set for Saturday, November 5th from 9am–5pm! This year will feature an immensely talented illustrator, Christian Robinson. As a storyteller through pictures, he not only makes his living illustrating picture books, but he is also an animator, working with Pixar Animation Studios and the Sesame Street Workshop. His award winning picture books include Josephine by Patricia Hruby Powell (a Coretta Scott King Illustrator Honor, a Robert F. Sibert Honor, and a Boston Globe-Horn Book Nonfiction Honor) and Gaston by Kelly di Pucchio, which was named a Best Book of 2014 by Horn Book, Kirkus, and Amazon.
His latest book, Last Stop on Market Street by Matt de la Pena, is a New York Times bestseller and winner of other honors and awards. “Having Last Stop on Market Street recognized by the Coretta Scott King, Caldecott, and Newbery committees is truly unimaginable,” said Robinson. “The pictures in this book were inspired by memories of riding the bus with my grandmother, who raised my brother and me, and taught me to count my blessings. Today I feel deeply blessed and humbled to be a part of a book that is inclusive and honors the experience of children who share a similar story.”
In addition to presentations by Robinson—on both illustrating and animating—there will be a writing workshop, live radio performance, a local author panel on world-building, kids’ crafts, book sales and signings, and writing and illustrating contests. Once again, this a not-to-miss event at the Bozeman Public Library.
