A jazzy holiday performance is coming to town featuring Montana State University students and local musicians. “Bending Towards the Light … A Jazz Nativity,” a Christmas story told through jazz, will be held at Hope Lutheran Church, located at 2152 Graf St., at 4pm on Sunday, December 3rd.
The costumed performance will include elements of a jazz musical and stage play, according to Ryan Matzinger, assistant professor and director of jazz in MSU’s School of Music in the College of Arts and Architecture.
MSU’s One O’Clock Jazz Ensemble, led by Matzinger, and local musicians will provide the music and entertainment.
“Bending Towards the Light” premiered in 1985 and is performed annually in New York City and in other cities across the country.
“The Montana State University School of Music is thrilled and excited to co-host this one-of-a-kind, community-based holiday musical extravaganza, bringing healing, culture and jazz music to Bozeman,” Matzinger said. “This unique and special event is bringing the city of New York and the long-storied tradition of the jazz narrative in America directly to the School of Music’s top jazz scholar-performers. We are grateful for the opportunity to be a part of jazz history in Montana.”
Tickets cost $22 to $50 and can be purchased online through www.eventbrite.com (search “Jazz Nativity”). •
