With another season of outdoor summer recreation on the horizon, join Friends of Hyalite for its annual Spring Clean-Up Day on Saturday, May 18th beginning at noon. This is a chance to help prepare one of Bozeman’s favorite recreational areas for sun-soaked adventures. Volunteers will pick up trash, clean out fire rings, and do whatever else needs to be done to spruce up Hyalite for the summer season. Bring gloves if you have them, dress for a day outside, and don’t forget the bear spray! Tools and trash bags will be provided. The afternoon of clean-up will wrap with a volunteer appreciation gathering with food and refreshments.
“Hyalite Canyon attracts over 30,000 visitors monthly during the winter and sees a surge to more than 60,000 monthly visitors in the summer, making it one of Montana’s premier recreation destinations,” according to Custer-Gallatin National Forest. The shoulder season allows for necessary annual maintenance to the road as snowmelt in the canyon occurs, exposing accumulated waste and upkeep needs the clean-up event is designed to manage.
Friends of Hyalite organizes this bi-annual Clean-Up in Spring and Fall with help from Custer-Gallatin and the City of Bozeman. Over the past decade, Friends and volunteers have removed more than 10,000 pounds of garbage and recyclables from trailheads, parking lots, campsites and along roads. Clean-Up days are held in May and October.
