Live From The Divide, “A Celebration of The American Songwriter,” is broadcasted every Monday at 6pm on public radio station KGLT 91.9 and 97.1. The intimate 50 seat venue is located inside of a commercial recording studio where the audience has the unique opportunity to be a part of a live recording and sit just feet away from singer/songwriters as they perform and share stories. The style of music you can expect to experience is conveniently lumped into the Americana genre. Which is simply an amalgam of American roots music formed by the confluence of shared and varied sounds merged from folk, country, blues, rhythm and blues, and rock ‘n’ roll. If you haven’t had the opportunity to attend a live taping, you’ve got plenty of chances with these upcoming shows.
Jefferson Hamer, David Wilcox, Gregory Alan Isakov, Jeffrey Foucault, Frank Fairfield, and others. Indie rock singer/songwriter Shelby Earl is set for Thursday, October 27th. With music described as “gritty and soulful, raucous and beautiful,” the Seattle artist was named by NPR/LA Times music critic Ann Powers as her “new favorite songwriter,” and her solo debut album, Burn the Boats (produced by John Roderick of the Long Winters, out on Local 638 Records) was named the “#1 Outstanding 2011 Album You Might Have Missed” by Amazon.com. She has since garnered praise from the likes of Rolling Stone, Paste Magazine, NPR, KEXP, No Depression, American Songwriter, and many more. Earl’s sophomore album Swift Arrows (produced by Damien Jurado), was released in late-2013 to further critical acclaim, and in the words of Benjamin Gibbard (Death Cab For Cutie/Postal Service) it “proves [Shelby] has the most heartbreakingly beautiful voice in Seattle.”
Blues and roots singer/songwriter Spencer Bohren will follow on Friday, October 28th. His music resonates with the ambience of the rivers, roads, and bayous of the American South. He has a marvelous gift for sharing his great love for America’s wealth of traditional folk, blues, gospel, and country music with audiences of all ages. His ability to animate the musicians and singers from the past with both respectful readings of their music and spellbinding stories is legendary. Spencer’s laid-back stage presence and comfortable delivery make each concert feel like a pleasant visit with an old friend. Woven through the fabric of a Spencer Bohren performance are his stunning original pieces, teeming with echoes of the traditional music he loves, yet written from a modern viewpoint. From gently opinionated topical songs to energetic highway tunes to disarmingly beautiful ballads, Spencer presents a wide range of music, punctuated by superlative guitar playing and using an ever-changing assortment of vintage guitars, lapsteels, and banjos. The atmosphere of his New Orleans home subtly informs each performance. What’s more, the stories that preface the songs are often as well received as the songs themselves.
