Jazz for everyone! Kristin Korb returns to her roots for regional tour
There are few bassists who can sing and there are even fewer who can do it well. Kristin Korb, a native of Billings, has carved a niche as one of the finest in that realm. Known for her exuberant spirit and contagious optimism, she returns to her roots for a tour across Montana, Wyoming, and Idaho. Joining Korb for the tour are Montana all-stars Craig Hall (guitar) and Erik Olson (piano, saxophone). The second of five performances comes to Downtown Bozeman’s historic Ellen Theatre on Sunday, March 3rd at 7pm. All seats are $20.50 and available in advance at www.theellentheatre.org.
“Kristin Korb is a jewel of jewels. The bassist and vocalist commands both of her instruments with panache, engaging them simultaneously with an ease comparable to breathing.” – Tyran Grillo, All About Jazz
Korb grew up in a musical family and often presented concerts with her three younger brothers. Her passion for music eventually led to a music education degree from Eastern Montana College in 1992. While earning her master’s degree from the University of California in San Diego, she met and studied with bass icon Ray Brown. Their meeting resulted in her debut recording for Telarc Records in 1996. After almost twenty years based in Southern Callifornia, Korb fell in love, married, and moved to Denmark in 2011. She tours internationally as an artist and educator.
Joining Korb on guitar is Bozeman-based Craig Hall. Known as the go-to guitarist in the region, he has performed with some of the biggest names in jazz such as Joey Calderazzo, Grace Kelly, Lee Konitz, Azar Lawrence, Benito Gonzales, Jack Walrath, Bob Sheppard, Steve Houghton, and Camila Meza. In Montana, Hall is a mainstay on the concert programs at Walkers (Billings), Daly Jazz (Missoula), and Plonk (Bozeman). He is also known as a master educator, having served on the faculty of various jazz camps (Stanford Jazz Camp, Madison River Music Festival, Yellowstone Jazz Camp) and presenting clinics across the country.
A native of Powell, Wyoming, pianist and woodwind specialist Erik Olson has proven an exciting new addition to the Billings music scene. At only 28 years old, Olson has performed with jazz legends Stefon Harris, Steve Turre, and the Glenn Miller Orchestra. Other notable artists that he has performed with include Nick Mancini, Ronnie Bedford, Kansas, Dave Pietro, and Eric Reed. In 2013, Olson accepted a position at Sheridan College as a Piano and Saxophone instructor. He also is one of the founders of Allied Music, which is a well-known performing arts academy located in Billings. For the past 5 years, Olson has played and taught in and around the Billings area where he continues to expand Montana’s music scene through his playing and teaching.
