Green Door Gallery will host artist Cathryn McIntyre for an artist reception and the opening of her exhibit: Chronicling the Female Experience Amid Men on Friday, August 27th from 5-8pm.
This collection of McIntyre’s work originated as the result of a sexist encounter that she experienced during an art auction in 2012. After being told, “You paint yourself naked. That’s a painting worth buying,” she was incensed. She spoke with other woman to see if they had experienced sexist encounters while working in their professions. They all had.
“These works are a narrative. A dialogue. They are expressive of the experiences of these women, whose stories I have embroidered on the clothes they wore while they were working.”
I paint these women unclothed, naked, as they might be imagined by men gazing at them, sexualizing them, while they work. Their nudity is an uncovering of the truth behind that sexual gaze, but it is also my celebration of the beauty of the female form and of feminine spirit. I sew every stitch of the painting surface by hand, embroider every tedious word, and in doing so elevate “women’s work” by working as women have throughout the ages, with needle and thread.”
