BFS Film: “It Was Just an Accident”
January 14, 2026 @ 7:00pm
This January, the Bozeman Film Society presents a collection of critically acclaimed international films that have won prestigious Cannes Film Festival Awards and are nominated for Golden Globe Awards. The Winter Film Series will be held on consecutive Wednesday’s downtown at The Rialto Theater, with the opening film 7 PM on January 14th. Directed by Jafar Panahi, an acclaimed dissident Iranian filmmaker, and titled “It Was Just an Accident,” this Palme d’Or-winning film delves into the consequences of a single, unintended act, presented in a restrained and deeply human narrative. Panahi’s direction offers no easy answers, only the weight of consequence. The film is rated PG13 and is presented in Persian with subtitles.
The next film in the series is “Sentimental Values,” the Cannes Grand Prix winner. Directed by Joachim Trier and starring Stellan Skarsgård, Renate Reinsve, and Elle Fanning, the film follows Gustav, an estranged father and once-celebrated director who is eager to reclaim his former glory. Gustav reconnects with his daughters, Nora and Agnes, and offers Nora the lead role in his new film. However, she refuses and learns that the part has been given to a Hollywood star, which further escalates the situation. The film screens on Wednesday, January 21 at 7 PM. Rated R. In Norwegian, Swedish, and English.
Brazilian film, “The Secret Agent”, follows on Wednesday, January 28th. Starring Cannes Best Actor Wagner Moura, and Directed by Best Director Kleber Mendonça Filho, this world-class political thriller is precise as a razor and expansive as a novel. Dazzlingly filmed in ultra-saturated widescreen, in 1977 Brazil, a man is on the run from government hitmen. Hiding out under an alias in Recife, he becomes enmeshed in a nefarious web of rampant surveillance and official corruption. 6:45 PM showtime. Rated R. In Portuguese.
Single tickets and Winter Series passes are available at the door and www.bozemanfilmsociety.org. Doors open 30 minutes before showtime. GA Tickets $10-$14 (plus fees). “Keep ‘em flickering!”
