This February, the Emerson’s Jessie Wilber Gallery will feature ledger drawings by prominent Native American artist, Dwayne Wilcox. Dwayne is an Oglala Lakota born and raised on the Pine Ridge Reservation in South Dakota. Dwayne is a self-taught artist who was a part of the Ledger Art revival of the 60’s and 70’s. Ledger Art is a term for Plains Indian narratives drawing or painted on old accounting books or ledger papers. This art form originated in the 1860’s – 1880’s. Rather than relying on traditional imagery and romantic versions typically depicted in ledger drawings of the past, Dwayne takes his ledger drawing into the 21st century by employing humor and satire to show us images of his personal life and the lives of Native Americans today. This traveling exhibit was made possible by the Missoula Art Museum and the Montana Art Gallery Directors Association.
