Bozeman Symphony to present Holst’s astrologically inspired orchestral suite
The Bozeman Symphony continues its 52nd concert season presenting a thrilling array of symphonic repertoire spanning the eras. Featuring the exceptionally talented members of the orchestra and symphonic choir, along with world-class guest artists, the Symphony is a place where you’ll find new friends and old. Highlighted this season are many local favorites that assuredly make the music sparkle.
Performances of The Planets will feature special guest Tristan Hernandez, performing the first movement of Haydn’s Cello Concerto in C major. Haydn is paired with the famous and progressively popular The Planets by Gustav Holst presenting one man’s astrological approach to our universe. Bozeman Symphony welcomes Music Director finalist Andrew Crust to conduct this weekend. Performances will take place on Saturday, October 26th, at 7:30pm, and Sunday, October 27th, at 2:30pm, both at the Willson Auditorium.
Crust will be the second of six Music Director finalists to conduct the orchestra and symphonic choir this season. The organization’s Board of Directors will host finalists over a span of two weeks as each participates in guest conducting rehearsals and performances, along with scheduled activities to include meetings with the orchestra, choir, administrative staff, Board of Directors, donors, community partners, media, Montana State University and the public schools. Music Director finalists will participate in the season’s programming as they present a “conductor’s choice” highlighted at each concert series performance held at Willson Auditorium. Crust has selected “Orawa” by Wojciech Kilar as his conductor’s choice piece. He describes it as a personal favorite and a minimalist piece that flows like water, with each small stream meeting to form a river. “It has a surging energy that never stops.”
Andrew Crust has developed a versatile international career as a conductor of orchestral, opera, ballet and pops programs. Currently serving as the Assistant Conductor of the Vancouver Symphony in Canada, he conducts a large number of subscription, pops, educational and contemporary concerts with the VSO each season. In the 2019-2020 season Crust will debut with the Bozeman and Lima Symphonies as a Music Director finalist and will begin a relationship with the San Diego Symphony as Cover Conductor. Recent engagements include performances with the Winnipeg Symphony, Memphis Symphony, Hartford Symphony, and l’Orchestre de la Francophonie in Québec.
Tristan Hernandez is the senior division runner up for the 2019 Montana Association of the Symphony Orchestras’ Young Artist Competition. He has performed as a member of the orchestra in previous seasons, and the Bozeman Symphony is thrilled to showcase him as a soloist. Prior to the concert, Hernandez will be performing a free solo program at 2pm on Saturday, October 19th, at the Bozeman Public Library. Enjoy a forty-five-minute serenade followed by a Q&A session with this successful young professional.
Adult tickets for The Planets range $27 to $67 with student discounts available. A limited number of rush tickets are also available, based on availability. This concert season is generously supported by David and Risi Ross.
