Derrick “Duckie” Simpson the “Gong Gong Gullie” is the founder and leader for Black Uhuru. Although going through numerous lead singers and musicians they have remained to be one of the most recognized and prolific reggae band for over 50 years. The roots of Black Uhuru were formed in Kingston Jamaica’s Waterhouse district also known as “Firehouse” in the early 60s. Though considered to be one of Jamaica’s toughest neighborhoods, it’s home to several other reggae singers and musicians. It was where Duckie Simpson grew up and learned to sing from boyhood friends Winston “Pipe” Matthews and Lloyd “Bread” McDonald of Wailing Souls and Bob Marley.
Black Uhuru’s long success has allowed them to become ambassadors of reggae while earning several achievements in the music industry. With 14 full length albums, 7 instrumental dub albums, and 4 live albums they have the highest record sales in reggae music behind Bob Marley. The album ‘Red’ was voted #23 for Rolling Stone’s list of “100 Greatest Albums of the 1980s”. Aside from winning the first reggae grammy, they have been nominated five times since.
They are the only reggae group to have won the Diamond Awards of Excellence in 1994. Despite all of Black Uhuru’s changes in different singers and musicians, the one thing that has always remained is Derrick “Duckie” Simpson. See him in person at this intimate performance! Tickets to this event ar $17 in advance and $20 at the door. This is an all ages show. Doors at 7pm. Southern rockers Jackyl will bring their energetic show to Faultline on Wednesday, September 9th at 9pm. It’s been nearly 20 years since Jackyl shot out of Georgia with its wild, untamed and uncouth approach to rock ‘n’ roll. Equal parts hard rock, heavy metal and Southern rock, Jackyl formed in 1991 and brought back rock ‘n’ roll back–back to its down-to-earth, wild, fun-loving origins. Full of spit and swagger–and a “dirty” sense of humor to boot–Jackyl quickly earned a deal with Geffen Records and have been making albums ever since.
But Jackyl’s live shows were already legendary before the ink dried on the Geffen contract. The band has earned two Guinness Book of World Records citations and the designation “The Hardest Working Band in Rock ‘N’ Roll” for performing 100 shows in 50 days as well as 21 shows in 24 hours. Dupree says the most grueling of the two was 21 shows in 24 hours. Jackyl completed that task in Texas, and the shows were all done with full lights and sound. The daytime sets were 45 minutes long whereas the ones done at nighttime were between 90 and 120 minutes long. Feel the noise at their Faultine show! Tickets to this event are $20. This is an all ages show. Doors at 8pm.
