Bozeman Film Society continues its season with a screening of the critically acclaimed feature, American Fiction. The event will be held at Downtown Bozeman’s Ellen Theatre on Wednesday, March 13th. The five-time Oscar nominee will screen at 7pm.
Cord Jefferson’s hilarious directorial debut confronts our culture’s obsession with reducing people to outrageous stereotypes. Jeffrey Wright stars as Monk, a frustrated novelist who’s fed up with the establishment profiting from “Black” entertainment that relies on tired and offensive tropes. To prove his point, Monk uses a pen name to write an outlandish “Black” book of his own, a book that propels him to the heart of hypocrisy and the madness he claims to disdain. Rated R, the film runs 117 min and co-stars Tracee Ellis Ross, Sterling K. Brown and Issa Rae.
“Elegantly walking a line between absurdist satire and family drama, this is a clever send-up of how the broadness of Black culture gets reduced to cliché.” – Empire Magazine
Following on Wednesday, March 27th, the Ellen hosts a screening of Origin from director Ava DuVernay, who also wrote the film’s screenplay and co-produced. The film will be shown at 7pm.
Inspired by New York Times bestseller Caste: The Origins of Our Discontents, Origin tells the story of Isabel Wilkerson, the first Black woman to win the Pulitzer Prize for Journalism. While grappling with tremendous personal tragedy, Isabel sets herself on a path of global investigation and discovery. Despite the colossal scope of her project, she finds beauty and bravery while crafting one of the defining American books of our time. Rated PG-13, the film runs 135 min.
“Origin is a sincere, passionate, and excellently acted film that takes us on a discovery, with wonder, of fascinating historical situations.” – Los Angeles Times
