Receive a crash course in modernity with Gallatin Valley Friends of the Sciences, whose popular lecture series continues its new season this month with all new subject matter. Co-sponsored by Museum of the Rockies and Hopa Mountain, the next talk of the ’24-’25 series is set for Wednesday, October 16th. “AI & Society: Why It Matters” will begin at 6pm. It will be held in MOR’s Hager Auditorium.
What is artificial intelligence, and how is it affecting our society today? Dr. John Sheppard, MSU Distinguished Professor of Computer Science, will discuss the issues around creating an “AI” and what this means for people in the real world. He will also introduce the work his lab is doing to develop AI systems to effectively support farmers, wildfire managers, physicians and military pilots in their work.
The informative talks will be presented in person on select Wednesdays this fall. The presentations are free and open to the public, with seating on a first-come, first-served basis. Face masks are recommended but not required.
Coming up next: “Is an Anthropogenic Planet Domesticating Wildlife? The Case of Coyotes & Gray Wolves in the American West” is set for Nov. 13th. Details forthcoming.
