World Fair Trade Day, and it is a great opportunity to support
companies making chocolate fairly but, practice it everyday.
After decades of empty promises from the largest chocolate companies,
there are still over 1 million child laborers growing the cocoa that goes
into the chocolate you see on store shelves. Child laborers in cocoa are
exposed to harmful pesticides, carry heavy loads, work long hours, and
handle dangerous tools, like machetes.
But, these A-rated chocolate companies are working to end the chocolate
industry’s reliance on child labor. They are reforming the industry
and demonstrating that chocolate can be made fairly and more equitably.
Many of the companies on this list are fair trade certified, pay cocoa
farmers more for their cocoa beans, and provide a premium to cocoa-growing
communities to help ensure that kids are not involved in hazardous work and
able to go to school.
We cannot let big chocolate companies continue to put profits over the
health of children. By purchasing chocolate from these A-rated companies,
you demonstrate that there is a demand for ethical (and green!) chocolate.

P.S. Your support means we can do even more to combat child labor and
protect the future for people and the planet.
