REI Bozeman continues to host FREE outdoors-based presentations this winter. Here’s a look at a few of the upcoming courses.
Women’s Snowshoeing with SheJumps! will take place Saturday, January 19th from 10am–12pm at Lindley Park Pavilion. SheJumps, a national organization co-founded by alpine skier Lindsey Dyer aims to get more women and girls outside. In partnership with REI’s Force of Nature initiative, join to celebrate National Winter Trails Day by spending some time on the snow with other outdoor-loving women! Bring your own snowshoes or let REI provide a pair free of charge. Prepare for this event by registering for Women’s Snowshoeing Basics on Jan. 16th, then pick up your snowshoes at the store at 6pm on Friday night and get some last-minute tips for gearing up. The event itself will be at Lindley Park, on the snow!
Looking to next month, check out a Women’s Avalanche Awareness class on Wednesday, February 6th from 6–7:30pm. In partnership with the Friends of the Gallatin National Forest Avalanche Center, hone your backcountry decision-making skills in this free avalanche awareness class just for women and taught by a female instructor. Topics include avalanche terrain recognition, the effect winter has on avalanche hazard, the human factor, and basic companion rescue procedures. All questions are welcome in this open, approachable learning environment.
Free your heel and your mind will follow. Cross-Country Skiing Basics is set for Thursday, February 7th from 6–7:30pm. Course leaders will discuss the fundamental differences between backcountry, telemarking, and touring ski styles. Also covered will be proper clothing and information on where and how to get started in this fun winter activity.
Many REI classes and presentations are free and open to the public, but registration is required as space is limited. Reserve a spot now at www.rei.com/learn, where you can find more information about these and other upcoming courses and events.
