Walking Sideways: An Insider’s Guide to The Rialto
by Dalton Brink
My wife tells me I should quit smoking.
She’s right, of course.
I drink too much beer too, but we all have our vices.
I do a lot of things too much… speeding, talking, pacing, cursing. I do things I shouldn’t do, say things I have no business saying.
Sometimes, when the moon is big and bright, I walk in the cool of twilight along the gravel alleys of the northeast side thinking about the vastness of space and the way the wind glides across the surface of the earth, the way the light reaches us from dead stars and how many other lifeforms may be doing the same thing. Makes me feel small and grateful to be here. It keeps me in check. I need it, the reminder to enjoy the things I’m able to enjoy while I can. It’s part of the reason I’m grateful to have The Rialto. Here are a few of the things I’ll be checking out in the coming weeks.
August 3rd – Rialto Rumors: A Storytelling Series
Storytelling is arguably the most ancient form of art in human history. We are communal creatures. We like to revel in our victories with others and misery loves company. This is the inaugural show in what is to become a regular series here at The Rialto. Hosted by one of Bozeman’s most beloved storytellers, Ryan Cassavaugh, this edition is titled “Catastrophe: Good Intentions Gone Terribly Wrong.” Being human inherently means failing, which is something we can all relate to. These are stories that will make you glad they don’t involve you, while you cringingly empathize.
August 8th – Mary Gauthier
If you follow this article at all, you probably are already aware of my love of the songwriter. What you may not know is that I am also a veteran of the US Navy. I ran nuclear reactors for a few years before dropping out. I grew a grand appreciation for those who choose (or those who are coerced into) the armed forces. I don’t agree with the policies made regarding how we use the military for most of its duties. That said, Mary’s newest album Rifles and Rosary Beads was co-written by a few veterans who relate stories that need to be told. In a time when America has been at war longer than at any other time in its history, we must be diligent to ensure apathy doesn’t take a foothold in our conscience. This is a songwriter relevant to our times who shouldn’t be missed.
August 11th – Night of Local Country with Ian Thomas & The Band of Drifters and The Katherine Taylor Band
Ian Thomas and his band are beginning to become a staple here at The Rialto. Their traditional country style is a rarity in a world of bad southern accents coming out of Nashville that attempt to pass themselves off as country. It’s bad southern pop. Well these guys are the real deal. The Katherine Taylor Band makes their debut as support with a killer lineup of top musicians. Plan for a night of dancing, because if you don’t, your SO will leave you regretting it.
