Verge announces auditions for virtual winter production
Verge Theater will present a kick-ass virtual production of AIRNESS by Chelsea Marcantel in Spring of 2021. Dates for presentation will be decided once the show is cast.
AIRNESS, winner of the 2018 M. Elizabeth Osborn New Play Award given by the American Theatre Critics Association, is a loud, rowdy comedy that grants us access to the inner world of COMPETITIVE AIR GUITAR!
AIR GUITAR? SERIOUSLY?? HELL YEAH, WE’RE SERIOUS!
AIRNESS is a big-hearted comedy, but air guitar is No. Joke. Come and see the irresistible, badass rock & roll fantasy in action: check out this trailer for AIRNESS, or stream this documentary on the Air Guitar World Championship! THIS COULD BE YOOOOOU!
THE SHOW: When Nina enters her first air guitar competition, she thinks winning will be easy. But as she befriends a group of charismatic nerds all committed to becoming the next champion, she discovers that there’s more to this art form than playing pretend; it’s about finding yourself in your favorite songs, and performing with raw joy. Will Nina be able to let go and set herself free onstage? Following her mission to shred or be shredded, AIRNESS is an exuberant reminder that everything we need to rock is already inside us.
ROLES: 4 males, 2 females in their 20s and 30s. We’re looking for actors who channel the passion, excitement and fun of air guitar into these characters/personas:
Ed “SHREDDY EDDY” Leary
Gabe “GOLDEN THUNDER” Partridge
Mark “FACEBENDER” Lender
Astrid “CANNIBAL QUEEN” Anderson
Nina “THE NINA” O’Neal
David “D VICIOUS” Cooper
The role of Golden Thunder must be a Black or Brown or Indigenous actor, and the role of D Vicious must be a White actor, but otherwise casting is open to everyone, regardless of race, ethnicity, religion, ability, gender, identification, expression, socioeconomic level, experience… WE WANT YOU!
WHEN: Director Alex Miller, who most recently directed The Flick for Verge, will hold virtual auditions via Zoom on January 23rd. Performance dates will be decided once the show is cast.
HOW TO AUDITION AND WHAT TO EXPECT: Actors will RSVP for a time (10 am, 12 pm, 2 pm, or 4 pm) to audition in small groups via Zoom. Auditions will be readings from the script and two air guitar demonstrations: one song of the performer’s choice, the other a surprise, freestyle pick. Please prepare one, 30-second song clip of your choice to show off your fiercest air guitar abilities.
