The Montana State track and field program has been known as the home of a majority of the region’s indoor meets with one of the best facilities in the Big Sky Conference. MSU makes its claim with its outdoor home as the Bobcat Track and Field Complex completed renovations in July of 2018.
The MSU Track and Field Complex, located southeast of Bobcat Stadium, had last seen updates to its oval surface in 2002. In June of 2016, Beynon Sports Surfaces, Inc. started installation of a new all-weather track surface to all portions of the oval and event areas.
Beynon Sports installed the BSS 10000 System which is the most popular product the company offers. The surface features a bio-engineered force reduction layer integrated with fine SBR rubber granules to create an impermeable shock-absorbing cushion. With 29 percent more two-component polyurethane than competing systems, the performance line surface delivers optimal shock absorbency and superior energy returns.
The new track also features striking Montana State University colors. The blue oval surface with gold relay exchange zones will stand out south of the University campus. It creates a solid link to the Worthington Arena surface which is highlighted by MSU’s Bobcat logo and the school colors.
Beyond the running oval and events area, the facility saw upgrades to the long jump and triple jump pits. A retro-fit long jump pit sand catcher system was installed to the three sides of the two existing pits.
A final addition made to the facility improvements at the Bobcat Track and Field Complex was a new Daktronics Outdoor LED Video Display that was installed in June of 2018. Located on the west end of the track between the running oval and hammer throw event area, the videoboard measures 12 feet by 10.8 feet. The board is able to display live video and results, along with customized animations geared for MSU track and field competition.
In 2006, a new throwing area was completed on the south side of the track and field complex, a dedicated cage and throwing field for hammer and discus. The facility boasts spectacular views of the Bridger, Hyalite and Spanish Peak mountain ranges.
Renovations to the Bobcat Track and Field Complex were completed behind efforts by the Bobcat Track and Field Association.
