Stand in Solidarity on April 6th with Bozeman’s Women to Commemorate National Equal Pay Day!
On April 6th at 6:00 pm, the Bozeman City Commission will commemorate National Equal Pay Day – which officially took place March 24th – by reporting on the status of its two Resolutions to close the gender pay gap at its weekly meeting. The Bozeman for CEDAW Task Force, a group dedicated to making Bozeman a safer and more just place for the most marginalized women and girls, and Bozeman Business and Professional Women (BBPW), a group of women working to ensure that women in the Gallatin Valley have the tools to succeed, by connecting, educating, and supporting Bozeman’s professional women, together will be sharing each of their work to help close the intersectional gender pay gap here in Bozeman.

We are commemorating National Equal Pay Day because the City of Bozeman adopted 2 Equal Pay Resolutions: 1) in 2015, Equal Pay for Equal Work (4601); and 2) in 2019, City of Bozeman Gender Pay Equity establishing requirements for the City’s venders and suppliers (5169), whose implementation must be backed with forward-moving action especially during a Pandemic with economic crises. According to the City of Bozeman’s own Equal Pay Report for 2019, women employees only earned 69.8% of what men earned. Across Montana, the data from Women’s Foundation of Montana’s 2018 Equal Pay Report, demonstrates this economic unfairness and inequity is exacerbated by race and ethnicity, as Black women earn 62% of what white men do, Hispanic women earn 54%, and Native American women earn 67%.
It is critical that we address the inherently intersectional and unfair nature of pay inequity within our own community and stand in solidarity with women and those most marginalized by race and ethnicity at the April 6th City Commission meeting. By virtually attending this meeting, you will learn and hear firsthand from the City of Bozeman on progress made in the past year, about the causes of and solutions in progress to address pay inequity, and from BBPW and the Bozeman Task Force on the way in which the Covid pandemic has served to highlight the racialized and gendered way our society views the value of “women’s” work and pay equity’s connection to other economic security and justice issues, impacting Bozeman workers and families.
