‘Rise for the River’ benefits flood relief at Pine Creek & more summer shows
There’s still plenty of time to snag tickets to a sunset show at one of Southwest Montana’s favorite outdoor venues. Pine Creek Lodge brings acts of every genre to its space for live music aficionados far and wide. Here’s a look at what’s coming up – including a very special benefit series featuring a renowned Paradise Valley-based musician.
Just announced! John Mayer will present three live events as part of the “Rise for the River” in benefit of relief efforts following the historic flooding of Montana’s Yellowstone River.
The first is set for Monday, August 8th featuring Bob Weir with Mayer and opening support by the Kitchen Dwellers. The second on Sunday, Aug. 14th, sees comedian Dave Chapelle and Mayer on stage for a night of stand-up and live music. The final event is set for Sunday, Aug. 21st with a solo show by Mayer and local openers the Last Revel. All begin at 7pm with ticketing information available through Pine Creek’s website.
Concert proceeds will benefit the Southwest Montana Flood Relief Fund, a partnership between the Park County Community Foundation and Greater Gallatin United Way. This will provide support for immediate needs like emergency shelter, drinking water, food, clothing, food replacement from lost freezers and refrigerators, and will also help with clean-up and rebuilding efforts. Also at Pine Creek in August, don’t miss Lil Smokies with opening support from Pert Near Sandstone on August 4th. Drawing on the energy of a rock band and the Laurel Canyon songwriting of the ‘70s, the Smokies reimagined their approach to roots music on Tornillo, the band’s third studio album, named for the remote Texas town where it was recorded. Formed in Missoula, Lil Smokies have built a national following through constant touring with performances at Red Rocks, Telluride and more. Advance tickets are $35 or $40 day of show.
Black Lillies frontman Cruz Contreras warms up the crowd for Deer Tick on Aug. 5th. Hailing from Providence, Rhode Island, the four-piece alternative rock-folk group puts on an energetic show for its audiences. Their latest release, Live from Fort Adams, is available now. Matisyahu comes to Montana with an Aug. 6th performance at Pine Creek. Like only the most gifted storytellers, Matisyahu spins the rare kind of stories that simultaneously enlighten and enthrall and expand the audience’s sense of possibility. On his eponymous new album, the Grammy-nominated singer/songwriter/rapper shares his most autobiographical work to date, merging that personal revelation with a shapeshifting collision of reggae and hip-hop and boldly inventive pop. On Aug. 10th, enjoy a performance by Neighbor. With a diverse catalog of hundreds of songs, the musical juggernaut Neighbor has become one of the most exciting and unpredictable live bands on the music scene today. Austin-based nine-piece Shinyribs follows on Aug. 11th. The supergroup defies genres as a sonic melting pot of Texas blues, New Orleans R&B funk, horn-driven Memphis soul, country twang, border music, big band swing, and roots-rock. Montana’s own Laney Lou & the Bird Dogs perform with help from Wes Urbaniak & the Mountain Folk on Aug. 12th. Hitting the stage with a new album, Through the Smoke is a direct musical response to the isolating times of the last few years. The Bird Dogs found a way to represent their journey through the hardship, while also celebrating the silver linings and breakthrough moments in their lives. Kentucky singer/songwriter Chris Knight takes the stage Aug. 13th with opening support by the Drunken Hearts. Pine Creek hosts Bruce Hornsby & the Noisemakers with help from Carm on Aug. 17th. Decades after winning a Grammy for Best New Artist and launching one of contemporary music’s most diverse careers, Hornsby still makes joyful noise as he discovers clever and expansive ways to chronicle dynamic musical snapshots of his often generously collaborative journey. Settle in for a performance by Denver-based Morsel on Aug. 18th. The five-piece jamgrass band mixes classic bluegrass sensibilities nuanced with a more traditional rock edge, resting in a warm balance of old-school string dusting and nu-school improvisation. This show is free of admission.
Band of Drifters open for Futurebirds on Aug. 19th. Recently celebrating their 10th anniversary as a band, the Atlanta-based indie rock band has received rave reviews for their unparalleled live performances. The Sweet Lillies bring their summer tour to Paradise Valley on Aug. 24th. With their acoustic string-band lineup of guitar, viola and upright bass given flight by ethereal, vocal harmonies that float like a dream, the Lillies’ music has an old-time soul with a forward-looking eye. Submerge in the musical spectacular that is Dopapod on Aug. 25th. Dopapod access a heightened level of cosmic harmony in their music. Featuring the Hillbenders, Keller Williams’ Grateful Grass sets up for a lively show on Aug. 26th. Williams is a singer, songwriter and musician who combines elements of bluegrass, folk, alternative rock, reggae, electronica/dance, jazz, funk, along with other assorted genres. He describes this performance as “loose interpretations of Grateful Dead songs done in a bluegrass style. The Road Agents close out the month with an Aug. 31st performance of their Montana-infused rock n’ roll. The guitar and mandolin duo comprised of Jeff Peterson and Justin Ringsak covers a wide range of topics, from songs about firewood to those about robbing banks. This show is free of admission.
