According to Brett Netson of Built To Spill, “The local record store is a cultural event. Every purchase you make, every day, every year, it is a rich cultural history in the making.” Join Cactus Records in making your own cultural history for the ninth annual Record Store Day on Saturday, April 16.
It’s a celebration of all that makes local, independent retailers great, packed with exclusive music releases and live in-store performances. Doors open at 10 a.m. At the core of Record Store Day are a series of new releases, over 200 of which are exclusive for independent music stores like Cactus.
The store has put in a huge order in hopes of getting a large selection for local music lovers. These releases include music from The Flaming Lips, Five Finger Death Punch, Superchunk, Allen Toussaint, Lucinda Williams, Notorious B.I.G., Madonna, Blitzen Trapper, Johnny Cash and Brandi Carlile. Alt-J’s “Live At Red Rocks” Record Store Day exclusive box set includes two colored LPs, plus a CD and DVD of the show from last summer.
The 75-minute set features songs from Cactus bestsellers “An Awesome Wave” and “This Is All Yours.” A “Star Wars: The Force Awakens” picture disc has “March of the Resistance” and “Rey’s Theme” by composer John Williams and images of The Millennium Falcon. Side by Side 7” singles, with a different artist on each side performing the same song include “I Started a Joke” from The Bee Gees and Faith No More, “This Must Be The Place” from Talking Heads and Echosmith, “Truck Drivin’ Man” by Willie Nelson and Uncle Tupelo and “Born Under a Bad Sign” from Paul Butterfield Blues Band and Albert King. Other Record Store Day exclusives include picture discs from James Bey, Justin Bieber, David Bowie, Disturbed, Iron Maiden, Muse, Ol Dirty Bastard and Sex Pistols. The Bozeman-based organization is dedicated to keeping the vinyl format and independent record stores alive (see why we love them?).
Cactus and Get It On Vinyl will host live in-store performances throughout the day. Heather Lingle will kick things off at 10:30 a.m. Then, starting at noon with The Dirt Farmers, a new band will go on hourly. Independence will host special dance performances between sets. Sean Devine is set for 1 p.m. and Soundbeast at 2 p.m. Solidarity Service at 3 p.m. will be followed by Patrick Lee Michaelis at 4 p.m. and Katie Careless & the Reckless Ambassadors at 5 p.m. At 6 p.m., hear Indigenous Eric. Laney Lou & the Bird Dogs will close out the music at 7 p.m.
