Join officials from Custer Gallatin National Forest on Friday, September 14th at Big Sky Resort’s Roosevelt Amphitheater for symposium “The Science of National Forest Planning” from 8am–1pm. This event is FREE and open to the public.
A forest plan guides the overarching direction of the forest for the foreseeable future (10-15+ years). Custer Gallatin is just over halfway through its own Forest Plan Revision process. The team is currently deep into writing the draft plan and draft environmental impact statement.
Join the symposium and learn a bit more in-depth about the science that goes into forest planning. Topics will include implementation of the planning rule, ecological integrity, setting the vision in a changing climate, fire as part of the ecosystem, the importance of riparian areas, and connectivity for all species.
This event will be presented following the 14th Biennial Science Conference on the Greater Yellowstone Ecosystem, with a special thanks to Yellowstone Forever.

Custer Gallatin National Forest is known as one of the most ecologically diverse landscapes in the region. The Forest stretches from the rugged high-country of the Absaroka-Beartooth Wilderness, the Gallatin Crest and vast portions of the Greater Yellowstone Ecosystem to the rolling landscapes and buttes of far southeastern Montana and northwestern South Dakota on the Ashland and Camp Crook districts.
