The Livingston Film Series is delighted to present a special spooky screening of The Hunchback of Notre Dame on Thursday, October 9th. In advance of its community theatre production of the same story, the film begins at 7pm at the Shane Lalani Center for the Arts.
This 1939 adaptation of the Victor Hugo novel is set in medieval Paris, where a deformed but kind bell ringer at a cathedral falls in love with a bewitching Gypsy who’s given sanctuary in the church after being framed for murder by a jealous official.
Directed by William Dieterle, the film stars Charles Laughton, Maureen O’Hara, Cedric Hardwicke, Thomas Mitchell and Edmond O’Brien. Critic Mike Massie wrote of the film, “Laughton and O’Hara’s performances always bring back the momentum; their poignant interactions are the clear highlights of the production.” Not Rated, the film has a runtime of 117 min.
Kicking off its latest season of screening independent features, documentaries, local films and vintage classics, doors open at 6:30pm with screenings to follow at 7pm. Admission is free, but donations are gratefully accepted. Concessions available. For more information, please visit www.theshanecenter.org.
