Local thespians return to the Livingston stage with a swampy fairytale this month. The Shane Lalani Center for the Arts invites audiences on a dazzling family adventure with Shrek the Musical with performances running from October 23rd through November 15th.
Based on the Oscar-winning DreamWorks animated film, Shrek brings the beloved ogre, his wisecracking donkey and a colorful cast of fairy-tale characters to the stage in a hilarious and heartfelt musical adventure. When Shrek’s peaceful life in his swamp is interrupted by a banished princess, a demanding ruler and a whole host of unwanted fairytale creatures, he sets off on a quest that takes him far beyond the safety of his familiar surroundings. Along the way, he discovers that first impressions can be deceiving – and that even an ogre might have a heart worth opening.

Packed with big musical numbers, outrageous humor and plenty of fairytale mischief, Shrek turns the familiar story into a celebration of friendship, acceptance and being comfortable with who you are. With a score that moves from energetic ensemble numbers to tender, character-driven moments, the show offers something for audiences of all ages. At its center is a wonderfully unlikely group of heroes learning that happily ever after doesn’t always look the way you expect – and that sometimes the most extraordinary stories begin when you stop trying to fit the mold.
Shrek the Musical runs weekends from Oct. 23rd to Nov. 15th. Performances take place in the Dulcie Theatre. Show times are Fridays and Saturdays at 7:30pm, with Sunday matinees to follow at 3pm. A special Thursday show is set for Nov. 12th at 7:30pm. Tickets are $25 for adults, $19 for seniors/students/educators/veterans, and $13 for youth 17 & under.
