Intermountain Opera Bozeman, in partnership with Haven, is set to present Rodgers & Hammerstein’s groundbreaking theatre masterpiece Carousel early this month. Performances will take place February 2nd–11th. Friday and Saturday shows begin at 7pm, with Sunday matinees to follow at 3pm. All will be held at Downtown Bozeman’s Ellen Theatre.
In a Maine coastal village toward the end of the 19th century, a swaggering, carefree carnival barker, Billy Bigelow, captivates and marries a thoughtful millworker, Julie Jordan. Billy loses his job just as he learns that Julie is pregnant and, desperately intent upon providing a decent life for his family, he is coerced into being an accomplice to a robbery. Caught in the act and facing the certainty of prison, he takes his own life and is sent ‘up there.’ Billy is allowed to return to earth for one day 15 years later, and he encounters the daughter he never knew. She is a lonely, friendless teenager, her father’s reputation as a thief and bully having haunted her throughout her young life. The community instills a sense of hope and dignity in both the child and her mother in a dramatic testimony to the power of love.
Featuring unforgettable songs like “If I Loved You” and “You’ll Never Walk Alone,” this production is a stunning tribute to the power of love, strength and family. Be swept away by this classic tale, brought to life at the Ellen with dazzling choreography and breathtaking performances.
Under the stage direction of Katherine M Carter, Carousel features a robust cast of performers and choral artists with the help of a talented backstage creative team.
