Inaugural BOAR race to support young adults experiencing homelessness
Join HRDC for their inaugural BOAR (Blueprint Obstacle Adventure Race). On Saturday, August 21st, HRDC and a talented volunteer race committee will host a 5K and 1K Obstacle Race. Proceeds from the race will benefit the agency’s services to support youth experiencing homelessness.
HRDC’s BOAR is a family friendly and team-oriented event. The race is open to all ability levels and will challenge team members to problem-solve and overcome obstacles together.
The 1K race is a unique opportunity for individuals of all abilities to participate in an obstacle race. People with developmental and mobility disabilities are welcome. Event organizers want everyone in the community to experience The BOAR so they are working hard to design obstacles to be inclusive to most abilities. Registration is between $25 and $30.
The 5K race is an obstacle race designed to test your mental and physical strength and challenge team members to problem-solve and overcome obstacles together. It will start and finish at Glen Lake Rotary Park (formerly East Gallatin Recreation Area). Competitive heats will be available. Registration is between $25 and $30.
HRDC’s BOAR race committee is proud to include Montana State University Honors students among their community partners! During the planning process, the Committee needed help designing obstacles. MSU Professor Brian Brush answered the call, “I just couldn’t resist the gravity of the opportunity. It seemed like a perfect fit for me to get involved given my position as Community Design Center Director and my life as an athlete with a lot of history in the Bozeman sporting world. So I’m very happy I finally made the leap!”
The Committee has had the privilege of attending presentations for two cohorts of Honors Arts and Architecture students, most recently in late April. In addition to conceptualizing equitable obstacles, building models, and estimating materials, students were asked to explain how their obstacles relate to youth experiencing homelessness. The BOAR Build Committee, with guidance from Structural Engineer, Ty Monks, have built two student-designed obstacles, including the “The BOAR Strong Wall” and “Boxes” with other builds planned every two weeks through mid-August.
