Livingston’s Blue Slipper Theatre presents the next production of its latest season with Patrick Barlow’s The 39 Steps, adapted from the novel by John Buchan. Performances are set for June 12th–28th. Friday and Saturday shows will begin at 7:30pm, with Sunday matinees to follow at 3pm. The local production is directed by Katie Mangett.
The Tony Award-winning stage adaptation of The 39 Steps, adapted by Patrick Barlow from the novel by John Buchan and inspired by Alfred Hitchcock’s classic film, is a whirlwind theatrical comedy packed with espionage, intrigue and inventive stagecraft. The story follows the dashing but ordinary Richard Hannay as he becomes entangled in a dangerous international conspiracy, racing across the countryside to clear his name while evading spies, police and mysterious assassins.

Performed by a remarkably small cast portraying numerous characters, The 39 Steps combines rapid-fire costume changes, physical comedy and clever theatrical illusion to create a fast-paced and delightfully absurd adventure. Equal parts suspense thriller and affectionate parody, the production delivers nonstop laughs while paying tribute to the iconic mystery and style of Hitchcock-era storytelling.
Tickets for The 39 Steps are $20 or $15 for students/seniors (plus fees) and are available at www.blueslipper.org. Seating at the Blue Slipper, located at 113 E Callender St, is limited. Please call (406) 222-7720 for more information. •
