Nursing and Violence: A Visual History

In the early modern Atlantic World, European Artists repeatedly portrayed Indigenous American women as breastfeeding infants in the context of violence. Sometimes the women themselves were engaged in acts of violence, while at other times, they bore witness to them. In the 16th, 17th and 18th centuries, what did it mean to portray these women in violent contexts. MSU Professor Kate Johnston teaches and researches the history of the Atlantic world and her presentation will explore some of these themes and offer possible explanations.
