It’s back! The Bozeman Ice Festival returns to Southwest Montana with its 22nd annual event, Wednesday through Sunday, December 5th–9th. Events will include the Adventure Film Festival, special adventure film screenings including National Geographic doc Free Solo, as well as Aprés Climb every night with swag raffles, Bridger Brewing’s signature brew, local grub and mingling, among so much more! Here’s a look at a few of the highlights.
The Adventure Film Festival comes to the Crawford Theater at the Emerson Center for the Arts & Culture, Saturday, December 8th with an exciting and eagerly anticipated film slate with showings from 9am–noon and 1–4pm. Adventurers, artists, filmmakers and activists created and continue to run this festival with a belief in the power of story and especially the narrative of adventure, awakening to change and challenging the world we live in. Adventure Film is rooted in the concept of “Making your own Legends,” empowering each of us to create positive change in our world. Get ready to awaken your senses while exploring the beautiful mysteries of our universe through the craftsmanship of storytellers, artists, extreme athletes and adventurers. A full lineup of films is available through the event website.
Highlighting the Ice Fest will be two screenings of National Geographic Documentary Film’s Free Solo. Both will follow the Adventure Film Fest at the Emerson on Dec. 8th with showings at 6:30pm and 9pm. Tickets are $20 with senior and student discounts available.
From award-winning documentary filmmaker E. Chai Vasarhelyi (Meru) and world-renowned photographer and mountaineer Jimmy Chin comes Free Solo, a stunning, intimate and unflinching portrait of the free soloist climber Alex Honnold as he prepares to achieve his lifelong dream: climbing the face of the world’s most famous rock – the 3,000ft El Capitan in Yosemite National Park – without a rope.
Celebrated as one of the greatest athletic feats of any kind, Honnold’s climb set the ultimate standard: perfection or death. Succeeding in this challenge, Honnold enters his story in the annals of human achievement. Free Solo is both an edge-of-your seat thriller and an inspiring portrait of an athlete who exceeded our current understanding of human physical and mental potential. The result is a triumph of the human spirit.

The 22nd Annual Bozeman Ice Climbing Festival is presented by Black Diamond Equipment. It is the signature event of the Ice Climbing Alliance, a recently established Montana nonprofit dedicated to promoting and preserving access and quality climbing experiences in Hyalite Canyon and beyond.
