Host to stage and screen entertainment of all varieties, Downtown Bozeman’s Ellen Theatre is also a great place to catch a show by touring musical acts and more. Here’s a look at who’s coming up this month.
Next up is the return of International Guitar Night, featuring an eclectic lineup of tunesmiths. The concert will be held on Wednesday, February 7th, with the music set to begin at 7:30pm. All seats are $34.
Celebrating its 24th outing, this year’s lineup features acoustic rock interpreter Luca Stricagnoli (Italy), award-winning classical guitarist Le THU (Vietnam), composer, guitarist and professor Marco Pereira (Brazil), and blues slide guitarist and vocalist Minnie Marks (Australia).
“International Guitar Night is an annual event that never disappoints,” says Ellen Executive Director John Ludin. “In fact, throughout the year, patrons often ask, ‘When are they coming back?’ If you’ve never seen IGN, this is a gathering of four amazingly gifted guitarists, each incredibly talented who captivate on their own and then blow away the audience when they perform together.”
Take in a night of fabulous live comedy courtesy of Paula Poundstone on Saturday, February 17th. The famed comic’s set begins at 8pm. All seats are $44.
Poundstone is known for her smart, observational humor and legendary spontaneous wit. She is the star of several HBO specials, including Cats, Cops and Stuff and Paula Poundstone Goes to Harvard. She is a regular panelist on NPR’s comedy news quiz, “Wait Wait… Don’t Tell Me!” and is heard weekly on her successful comedy podcast, Nobody Listens to Paula Poundstone. Also an author, Poundstone’s awards and accolades make a long list, being included in innumerable documentaries and literary compendiums noting influential comedians of our time.
Enjoy a leap-year performance by the MozART Group on Thursday, February 29th. The energizing quartet will take the stage at 7:30pm. All seats are $48.
All four members are well educated instrumentalists who graduated from prestigious Academies of Music in Warsaw and Łódz, but decided to play classical music in a humorous way. The MozART group created a worldwide unique musical cabaret, where the music – not the words – are the source of joy and laugh. Take a classical composition as canvas, analyze its structure and theme, surround it with musical associations, brilliant, outstanding ideas and while listening to the final product the listener is constantly surprised, amazed, laughing and moved to tears.
“We exist despite the sober formality of great concert halls, despite the boredom of classical musicians’ life, despite fanatic lovers of classical music, despite fans of rock, rap or pop who are afraid of classical music. We treat our Muse with a humorous irony and we’re sure, she will have nothing against it!” – MozART group
Looking to a new month, Damn Tall Buildings are set for a Friday, March 1st show. Visiting from New York, the music will begin at 7:30pm. All seats are $24.
In their early days, the Brooklyn-based project didn’t rehearse – they busked. Now, whether live or on record, the band still radiates the energy of a ragtag crew of music students playing bluegrass on the street. But anchoring that energy is their instrumental chops, their strong songwriting, and their varied influences that stretch beyond bluegrass, even beyond American roots music altogether. Whether sharing lead vocals and instrumental solos or blending their voices into loose, joyous harmony, the four members of Damn Tall Buildings blend elements of bluegrass, blues, roots-rock, and vintage swing to create a captivating, high-energy sound.
Wine, beer and concessions will be sold in the lobby one hour before the show. Ticketing and further information about other upcoming happenings is available at www.theellentheatre.org. For additional inquiries, call the box office at (406) 585-5885. •
