The Ellen Theatre, a Downtown Bozeman institution, is your source for some of the area’s best big screen entertainment and stage performances. It also houses some great musical acts, both local and those coming through town. Here’s a look at what’s happening downtown.
Sponsored by The Western Café, The Ellen’s annual Summer Western Series kicks off Friday, June 1st and runs through August. This year features a brand-new, fantastic lineup of classic gems and modern favorites starring John Wayne, James Stewart, Henry Fonda, Robert Redford and more! Here’s a look at the first batch of films.
Getting things started on June 1st, John Wayne stars in Angel and the Badman, followed by The Ox-Bow Incident with Henry Fonda on Wednesday, June 6th. Enjoy the Robert Duvall and Kevin Costner-fronted Open Range on Friday, June 15th. Starring James Stewart, Bend of the River screens on June 22nd before Ride the High Country with Joel McCrea and Randolph Scott closes the first month of films on June 29th. All movies start at 7:30pm and the Ellen Saloon opens for refreshments at 6:30pm. Tickets are $6 for each screening. Giddy up and catch this Cowboy Train – yee-haw!
Also beginning in early June, The Ellen announces a new summer film series – Kids’ Classics! Gather the relatives, from tots to teens and even grownups, to enjoy family favorites on the big silver screen. Here’s a look at the summer schedule.
The Incredible Journey is first up on Sunday, June 3rd. Then catch The Brave Little Toaster on Sunday, June 10th, The Sandlot on Sunday, June 17th, and The Adventures of Milo and Otis on Sunday, June 24th. Future screenings include Matilda on July 14th, The Misadventures of Merlin Jones on August 5th, and Free Willy closing out the series on August 26th. Soft drinks, candy, popcorn, and other refreshments are available for purchase starting at 1pm, with all movies starting at 2pm. Each film is only $2 at the door! Seating is first come, first served.
Dust off that surrey with the fringe on top! The Ellen Theatre is celebrating the 75th Anniversary of one of America’s most beloved musicals – tickets for Oklahoma! are on sale now. This Rogers and Hammerstein masterpiece features a talented cast of community members and a LIVE orchestra! If you’ve never seen this Broadway blockbuster, it’s the granddaddy of them all, with hit songs such as “Oh, What A Beautiful Mornin’,” (Everything’s up to date in) “Kansas City,” “I Cain’t Say No,” “People Will Say We’re in Love,” and the toe-tappin’ title tune – “Oklahoma!”
Oklahoma! opens Friday, July 13th on The Ellen stage, featuring a talented cast of community members and live orchestra. Tickets are $25 for adults and $18 for youth 17 and under. Premium seating is also available for $34 and upper balcony for $18. Oh, what a beautiful musical – Oklahoma! at The Ellen Theatre – it’s more than O.K.!

Also at the Ellen, TATE Academy is pleased to announce registration is open for the 2018 TATE Summer Workshops, set for June 18th–29th and July 23rd through August 3rd. The two-week sessions are designed to explore the various skills every actor needs. Workshops take place Monday through Friday from 9am–4pm.
Classes will focus on theatre games and exercises to stretch the voice, body, and mind, as well as scenes and improvisation to encourage students to develop their technique. Students will also have the opportunity to select classes that explore various aspects of theatre including musicals, technical theatre, and advanced acting concepts. In order for students to share what they have learned, both sessions will conclude with a showcase for invited friends and family.
Tuition $395 for each workshop. Discounts are available for siblings and to students registering for both sessions. Those in need of financial assistance are encouraged to apply for scholarships.
