Opera Montana is set to present Stephen Sondheim’s thrilling theatre masterpiece Sweeney Todd late this month. Performances will take place January 30th through February 9th. Thursday, Friday and Saturday shows begin at 7pm, with Sunday matinees to follow at 3pm. All will be held at Downtown Bozeman’s Ellen Theatre.
Attend the tale of Sweeney Todd as Stephen Sondheim’s Tony Award-winning thriller makes its professional Bozeman debut. The infamous tale of Fleet Street’s vengeance-seeking barber features razor-sharp lyrics and piping-hot musical drama. This unforgettable theatrical experience will leave you on the edge of your seat.
One of the darkest musicals ever written, Sweeney Todd: The Demon Barber of Fleet Street is the unsettling tale of a Victorian-era barber who returns home to London after fifteen years of exile to take revenge on the corrupt judge who ruined his life. When revenge eludes him, Sweeney swears vengeance on the entire human race, murdering as many people as he can, while his business associate Mrs. Lovett bakes the bodies into meat pies and sells them to the unsuspecting public. Perhaps composer/lyricist Stephen Sondheim’s most perfect score, Sweeney Todd is lush, operatic, and full of soaring beauty, pitch-black comedy and stunning terror. It’s one of the signal achievements of the American musical theater of the last 50 years, and it’s the high-water mark of Sondheim’s six remarkable collaborations with director Harold Prince [Stage Agent].
Under the stage direction of Benjamin Wayne Smith, Sweeney Todd features a robust cast of performers and choral artists with the help of a talented backstage creative team.
