Downtown Bozeman’s Ellen Theatre will present a number of upcoming film screenings of the classic and family favorite variety this month, along with a pair of wildlife documentaries. Gather friends and loved ones for some popcorn and the following titles.
A must-see on the big screen, Alfred Hitchcock’s The Birds shows on Friday, October 10th. Wealthy socialite Melanie Daniels (Tippi Hedren) meets charming lawyer Mitch Brenner (Rod Taylor) during a playful San Francisco pet shop encounter involving lovebirds. Melanie, intrigued, follows Mitch to Bodega Bay to surprise him, but soon after her arrival, several birds act strangely, even attacking the local people. All seats are $9.
Following on Saturday, Oct. 11th is a complimentary screening of Bringing Up Baby, starring Katharine Hepburn and Cary Grant. While trying to secure a $1 million donation for his museum, a befuddled paleontologist is pursued by a flighty and often irritating heiress and her pet leopard, Baby. Considered one of the best screwball comedies of all time, all seating is free on a first come, first served basis.
Celebrate “wild” places and the incredible life they support with Wild, from Pole to Pole on Thursday, Oct. 16th. Award-winning professional wildlife photographer and naturalist Rich Kirchner and naturalist Marylou Blakeslee explore wild areas and their importance, plus the amazing creatures that depend on these areas for their survival. Travel from the High Arctic to Antarctica, through Alaska, the American West, Baja, Galapagos, South America and South Georgia Island! This presentation includes a 65-minute multi-media slideshow/video and engaging Q&A. All seats are $11.25.
Considered Charlie Chaplin’s most beloved work, City Lights illuminates the silver screen on Friday, Oct. 17th. In the film, friendship and social ranking are not always as they seem. Enter a world of a disenchanted bourgeoisie, where a tramp is king and a blind girl is queen. Despite being a silent film in an era of “talkies,” City Lights continues to be understood and appreciated universally, a quality noted by Albert Einstein himself. All seats are $7.
Bring Them Home – a powerful story of resilience, culture and the fight for identity – screens on Saturday, Oct. 18th. The poignant documentary follows a group of Blackfoot Confederacy members as they work to bring the buffalo back to their ancestral lands and spiritual traditions. More than a story about wildlife, this film is a testament to Indigenous sovereignty, cultural survival and generational healing. Montana-native filmmakers Daniel Glick and Ivan MacDonald will be in attendance for the screening, with all seats available for $11.75.
Late this month, journey into the American West with Kevin Costner’s Academy Award-winning film Dances with Wolves on Saturday, Oct. 25th at 7pm. This sweeping epic follows Lieutenant John Dunbar, a Union officer who forms an unlikely bond with the Lakota Sioux after being stationed on the frontier. As he immerses himself in their way of life, Dunbar is forced to confront his own identity, loyalties and the harsh realities of a changing world. All seats are $9.
Also screening at the Ellen this fall: Georgia O’Keeffe: The Brightness of Light on Nov. 1st and Fly Away Home on Nov. 2nd. These are ticketed events. See host website for additional details.
