ChickenJam(s) liven up end of another summer
ChickenJam West brings Josh Hoyer & Soul Colossal to The Filling Station on Wednesday, September 6th at 9pm. Tickets to this 21+ show are $8 in advance and $10 at the door. Doors at 8pm.
The group’s combination of soul, funk and R&B is in a word, electric. Best displayed in their high-energy live show, the blend of Hoyer’s honest lyrics and his soulful (sometimes in-your-face) vocals merge with his top-notch band to create an undeniable chemistry. Inspired by the sounds of Stax, Motown, Muscle Shoals, New Orleans, Philly and San Francisco, the band continuously crosses musical boundaries both in style and era, and joins forces each show with a common goal — to have the crowd dancing so much they forget even their smallest troubles. Their album, Running From Love, released last year. The fevered pace has continued into 2017, with Hoyer appearing as a contestant on Season 12 of The Voice, a European tour, a live album release, numerous festival appearances, and a new EP in the works.
Experimental hip-hop project Deltron 3030 will perform on Bridger Brewing’s outdoor stage, Friday, September 8th, with local help from STiLGoNE and HemingwayRaps beginning at 6:30pm. Tickets to this all ages show are $24 in advance at Bridger Brewing, Cactus Records, and www.cactusrecords.net, or $30 at the door. Doors at 5pm.
Deltron 3030 is composed of a trinity of alt-rap all-stars: Master lyricist Del the Funky Homosapien, virtuoso turntablist DJ Kid Koala, and superproducer Dan the Automator Nakamura. Individually, they stand at the top of their respective musical disciplines.
On the eponymous Deltron 3030, they warped space, bent time, transcended genre and blew minds, creating an album that still stands today as one of the most important records in the annals of underground hip-hop. Critics called it a masterpiece, both timely and avant-garde — “Exactly what you might expect from such a teaming: a wildly imaginative, unabashedly geeky concept album,” said AllMusic.com. “It’s not only one of the best albums in either of their catalogs, but one of the best to come out of the new underground, period.” Pitchfork called Nakamura the “poet laureate of creepy, oppressive beats,” describing the album as an “exciting” reimagining of “the future from the bottom up” that reveals Del as a “surprisingly acute social critic.”
Some decade and a half later, the trio released long-awaited followup Deltron 3030: Event II, an album the group is now touring across the country.
The Nth Power and Ghost Note perform at The Filling Station on Tuesday, September 12th at 9pm. Tickets to this 21+ show are $17 in advance and $20 at the door. Doors at 8pm.
Proving that soul music can be exponentially greater than the sum of its parts, The Nth Power is on a mission to share the light. Formed during an impromptu late-night jam at Jazz Fest 2012 in New Orleans, the relentlessly funky and soulful band believes in music as a higher power tapping into an energy that is simultaneously sexy and spiritual, with songs that will inspire audiences to dance, groove, make love or just stand there with goosebumps.
Ghost-Note is an instrumental explosion like you’ve never heard before. These musicians fuse worlds of percussion with neck breaking and booty shaking rhythms, creating an explosive pulse and a night of energetic, unforgettable musical madness. Prepare to stay up on your feet all night long!
The Cave Singers are set for a Filling Station show on Friday, September 22nd at 9pm. Tickets to this 21+ show are $15 in advance and $18 at the door. Doors at 8pm.
Cave Singers lead vocalist Peter Quirk possesses a spiritual healing quality that rides within the tonal waves of his lyrics. Driving guitars, foot tapping percussion, and Quirk’s powerful vocals make an intricate quilt that blankets the audience in comfort, aggressively communicating a gentle reminder: we are soft bodies trying to survive with one another. Touring in support of their latest album, Banshee, the band’s melodic harmonies pull the body to the present, demanding our attention beyond all of the other noises of the world. Their passion for their craft translates from their recordings and resonates through their performances. The Cave Singers are the people’s band.
Looking ahead, the Campfire Caravan tour will make a stop at the Emerson Center on Wednesday, September 27th at 8pm. This night of music will feature performances by The Brothers Comatose, The Lil Smokies and Mipso. Tickets to this all ages show are $20 in advance and $25 at the door. Doors at 7pm.
Americana, bluegrass and country music genres are in the midst of a renaissance. In all corners of the country, artists are making a name for themselves with remarkably refreshing takes on traditional genres, efforts that are redefining the music beyond simple categorizations. The Campfire Caravan bands are of this ilk. Each reside in different parts of America — The Brothers Comatose from the West Coast, Mipso from North Carolina’s Triangle region, and The Lil Smokies from the Rocky Mountains. Bringing their own unique interpretations of, and inspired contributions to, the evolution of traditional American music, each act sets a new bar with their compelling live performances. Together on one stage, music fans will be treated to charismatic singers, virtuosic string-slingers, complex and nuanced songwriting and compositions, and more.
With each band quickly rising the ranks, “Campfire Caravan” is a nod to the musicians’ early days playing music, when they’d perform for friends and family in basements, living rooms, and around campfires. “Campfire Caravan” celebrates the American tradition of gathering communities around music. In an untraditional format, all three bands rotate in the lineup with no single ensemble acting as the tour headliner. A completely different show will be presented in each city with spontaneous collaborations amongst the groups taking place between sets.
