Afternoon of Cuban heroines, welcome to Bozeman Field School & more Library happenings
The Bozeman Public Library isn’t just a place for local bookworms! The downtown hub offers more than a selection of spines, periodicals, and movies to its many passholders – it also hosts a number of engaging events open to the public. Here’s a look at what’s coming up.
On Sunday, March 3rd, in honor of International Women’s Day, Gallatin Valley Friends of Cuba will feature the Montana premiere of the 2018 documentary, Cuban Women in Revolution, the film by Argentinian producer Maria Torrellas will screen in the Large Community Room from 2–5pm.
If the film has one message, it is the strength and confidence Cuban women have from the earliest stages of childhood to seniors who still contribute to society. In moving imagery, the documentary brings to life the heroines of the Cuban Revolution: from the clandestine operations against the U.S.-supported dictator Batista, to the attack on the Moncada in 1953, the time with Fidel and Raul in the Sierra Maestra and the role they played after the victory of the revolution in 1959. The contemporary women protagonists of the movie proudly explain the roles of Vilma Espin, Celia Sanchez, Haydee Santemaria as makers of the revolution, the impact they had and the example they represent in their lives and that of all Cubans.
After the 90-minute viewing (in Spanish with English subtitles), the GVFC will host a discussion and feature comments by some community women who have travelled to Cuba, also offering travel information about the upcoming 2019 US Women’s Delegation on Women’s Health and Human Rights. This event is free and open to the public.
