Mountain culture is steeped in access to the great outdoors, whether the sun is shining or the flakes are falling, with plenty of venues to enjoy a cold brew and hot plate while reveling in the day’s adventure. Another attribute of Montana life is its eclectic live music scene. We’re able to catch a show by a touring act or local musician any night of the week.
One of our hometown groups, Pinky & the Floyd, has maintained a steady popularity in the Bozeman community and Treasure State even as the roster of accessible artists has broadened. The Pink Floyd tribute packs every show with an always fresh spin on the English rock band’s catalog, but is perhaps best remembered for its visual presentation of the music featuring bright lights, explosive charisma and one emblematic pink beehive wig.
Late last month, Pinky lost one of its own when keyboardist Joe “The Business” Kirchner was tragically lost. His stage presence, mastery of the material and defining headpiece elevated each show to a euphoric place for both audiences and his fellow group members. An irreplaceable figure among his band of brothers and greater music community.
He was a man of kindness and generosity, of spirit and heart. Joe’s contributions to his beloved collective of musicians and the space that empowered them to flourish will be forever felt in his absence. The love for Joe lives on, without measure.
An outpouring of remembrance and sorrow has allowed those he touched to share their condolences, memories and well wishes for Joe’s friends and family. His wife and Pinky fanatic, Bridget, was badly injured in the accident that claimed her partner’s life – only a few short months after their nuptials. She is a vibrant young woman who supports the band at every show, whether behind the merch booth or from the front row.
A fundraiser to support Bridget in this time of grievous loss and to aid her recovery has been established through GoFundMe. Please consider giving, if able. Joe had too many fans to count, but she was his greatest. A second fundraiser to directly support Joe’s family can be found HERE. Our community mourns alongside his loved ones as he tickles the ivories to “The Great Gig in the Sky.” •
