‘Community Connect’ event comes to Library ahead of next Friday Forum
The Bozeman Public Library isn’t just a place for local bookworms! The downtown hub offers more than a selection of spines, periodicals, and movies to its many passholders – it also hosts a number of engaging events open to the public. Here’s a look at what’s coming up.
On Saturday, February 2nd, the Library will house the Community Connect event from 9am–1pm. The one-day, one-stop gathering brings together local volunteers to provide families and individuals access to services.
This community-led event will provide a wide array of services including medical and vision care, housing assistance, employment assistance, haircuts, pet care, massage, veterans services and more. All are welcome to connect to services.
Thank you to generous event sponsors: Greater Gallatin United Way, Gilhousen Family Foundation, and Town Pump Charitable Foundation.
Human trafficking is a bigger problem than we realize. Who is human trafficking affecting? How is it impacting our community? The Heart Initiative, an anti-human trafficking student organization at MSU, is working to raise awareness about human trafficking in the Gallatin Valley and beyond.
The public is invited to take part in the next Wonderlust Friday Forum of 2019, “Human Trafficking in the Gallatin Valley: Deception, Coercion & Exploitation,” set for February 8th in the community room from noon–1:30pm. The Heart Initiative has assembled a panel to address human trafficking from three perspectives: prevention, protection and prosecution. The panel will include:
– the co-chair of the Gallatin County Anti-Human Trafficking Task Force
– an official from the US Department of Homeland Security, the federal agency with primary responsibility for addressing issues of human trafficking
– the executive director of HAVEN, a non-profit organization providing services for survivors of sexual violence and abuse
– an activist from the missing and murdered indigenous women and girls movement
– a local health care professional who helped draft the United Nations anti-human trafficking resolution
The monthly speaker series is sponsored by MSU Wonderlust, a nonprofit organization affiliated with Montana State University’s Extended University and hosted by the Library. It is open to the public. There is no fee to attend or registration needed. Brown bag lunches are encouraged. Coffee and tea are provided. Join in! For more information, please visit http://montanawonderlust.org.
Stock up on winter reads at the next Friends Used Book Sale, set for Friday through Sunday, February 22nd–24th. Day one is reserved for members only, the sale running from 4–7pm. Not a member? Log on to www.FriendsBPL.org and join today! The event opens to the public on Saturday from 9am–5pm, before closing out with a “bag sale” on Sunday from 10am–2pm. Please bring your own bags! Books prices are affordable with special and collectible books individually priced for sale.
The sale of used books accounts for 3/4 of the Friends fundraising for the Library. Proceeds from the sale directly benefit Library services such as the Most Wanted book collection, new computer lab, bookmobile materials, book club kits, summer reading programs, and so much more. Head down for some great new reads and support your neighborhood library in the process!
Also at the Library throughout the month of February, the 2019 return of One Book One Bozeman featuring this year’s selection, Love and Other Consolation Prizes by New York Times bestselling author Jamie Ford.
This annual event promotes literacy and community engagement through the shared experience of reading. Each year a book title is selected and a month-long program of events is created to explore the themes of the book including author talks, discussion panels, and expert presentations. After reading Love and Other Consolation Prizes, check out the calendar and join in at one of the 11 gatherings (at the Library and other Bozeman venues) during the month of February including three author events with local Montanan Jamie Ford.
Sponsored by the Bozeman Public Library Foundation, this well-attended event series now in its 16th year engages our community and supports the Library’s core values of lifelong learning and equity of access.
Located at 626 E Main St., Bozeman Public Library creates opportunities that inspire curiosity, exploration and connection. For more information about other library happenings, please visit www.bozemanlibrary.org. •
